Octo 12/08/2005 10:19 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | AFX News Limited Venezuela offers oil and aid to hurricane-battered US 08.31.2005, 03:30 PM CARACAS (AFX) - Venezuela has offered emergency funds and fuel to the hurricane-battered US, and is ready to send a humanitarian aid taskforce to assist US disaster recovery efforts following Hurricane Katrina, the foreign ministry said. ´The government and the nation of the Bolivaran Republic of Venezuela express to the United States and its leaders their dismay over the magnitude and consquences of Hurricane Katrina,´ the ministry said in a statement. ´Venezuela reiterates the offer of President Hugo Chavez to send fuel and humanitarian aid to the United States to help alleviate the effects of this catastrophe.´ But US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said that he is ´not aware of any such offers´ of aid or oil from Venezuela. Caracas´s offer comes after months of deterioration in the relationship with Washington, which has branded Chavez a ´negative force´ in the region. Chavez had threatened to cut off oil supplies to the US, and after US evangelist Pat Robertson called last week for the US to assassinate Chavez, the Venezuelan leader accused Washington Monday of ´giving protection to a terrorist, who is demanding the assassination of a legitimate president.´ [email protected] Copyright AFX News Limited 2005. Anonymous Coward 12/08/2005 10:19 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | For Bush to accept any foreign help would be an admission that government power is limited, especially in disasters.....now who really thinks that he´s EVER going to admit that? And the media stooges just keep playing along, they know which side their bread is buttered on...and it sure isn´t our side! |
Octo 12/08/2005 10:19 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | International community offers help, prayers By Nicholas Kralev THE WASHINGTON TIMES September 1, 2005 snip> The State Department welcomed both the willingness of foreign nations to help and their plans for coordination with the American federal and state governments. It said it had received more than a dozen "offers of government assistance to aid in the search as well as reconstruction efforts." "We appreciate each and every one of them, and we are going to work in the coming days and weeks with foreign governments to see how we can best channel these offers of assistance," spokesman Sean McCormack said. The American Red Cross said it had heard from sister organizations in several countries, although aid is not expected for another couple of days. "We´ve been in touch with national Red Cross societies, and they tell us that private citizens are inquiring about sending donations," said Nadia Mitchem, an international disaster fundraising officer. U.S. officials and foreign diplomats said the widely shared sense is that as the world´s richest country, the United States can cope with the aftermath of natural disasters and does not need help. They said that was the reason for the lack of specific offers, although the European Union -- as well as Britain, Germany and other individual members -- informed President Bush and the governors of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama that they are ready to help with whatever is necessary. "The United States has very good infrastructure and capabilities, so we´ll wait for them to ask for concrete assistance," said Martina Nibbeling-Wriessnig, spokeswoman for the German Embassy. "You don´t want to send in several helicopters and have only one landing space." Russian President Vladimir Putin also said in a letter to Mr. Bush that his government "is prepared to provide help if requested." The most concrete offer came from Venezuela, which offered to send fuel and humanitarian aid to victims, despite otherwise strained relations with the United States. A senior State Department official said he was not aware of Caracas´ proposal but noted that unsolicited offers can be "counterproductive." [link to washingtontimes.com] |
Anonymous Coward 12/08/2005 10:19 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The least the administration could do is announce that they are turning away requests (no, I don´t really expect this to happen...). As far as most of the American people are concerned, the rest of the world has slapped them in the face and left them in their time of need. |

nzgirl 12/08/2005 10:19 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have no doubt Vladimir Putin is indeed sincere in offering Russian assistance to the disaster victims. The goodwill may be profound, but keep in mind that Russian aeroplanes tend to have a habit of malfunctioning. Of course this is merely due to the fact that poverty disallows thorough and consistent maintenance of old and decrepit aviatory equipment. Putin´s goodwill, and the concern of all other Global leader´s who wish to offer assistance during this humanitarian crisis, is highly commendable in my humble opinion. Here´s hoping Dubya is taking notes.... |
destiny watcher 12/08/2005 10:19 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | For Bush to refuse worldwide help for the victims of this disaster it is downright arrogance on his part. Go directly to the Governors or Mayors of the Counties which were destroyed. If they send a cashier´s check wouldn´t that be good enough from their people or banks? I don´t know how it works. I just can´t understand why individuals cannot help? |

Imagine the anger that will surface once this is over. When survivors who lost loved ones through disease / lack of water etc during the days following the hurricane, find out that international help was turned away by their government. This will come back to bite them hard IMO. |

Okay, first this article: A specialized urban search and rescue team from Vancouver will be joining the rescue efforts in Louisiana in the wake of hurricane Katrina. B.C. Solicitor General John Les said the province decided to send Vancouver Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) after officials in Louisiana asked for help. "We´re the first non-U.S.-based team to be requested," said Les. "They´re going to be helping as many people as they can." CTV Vancouver has learned that the team will board a plane Wednesday night heading to Lafayette, Louisiana, where local authorities will direct them to devastated areas. Sounds great! Except for one problem -- this team wasn´t allowed to fly into the US, blocked by Homeland Security from entering.<< Homeland Security won´t stop donations I´m sure, but these people need food and water and help NOW not money. |
Anonymous Coward 12/08/2005 10:19 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Were the plight of the people of Louisiana and Mississippi not so serious, it would have been darkly amusing that looters were shown on British TV last night stealing important survival equipment such as jeans and TV sets. BTW, I see that your brave President has viewed the carnage from air. He really is a man of the people isn´t he? |
