According to a statement issued by Michael Waldron, the control room at the Duane Arnold Energy Center was alerted to an explosion and fire involving a delivery vehicle around 1:30 p.m. Duane Arnold says further investigation shows the tires on the trailer exploded causing a loud noise, but the tanks were intact. The vehicle was delivering hydrogen to the facility.

Duane Arnold dispatched the internal fire brigade. The Palo and Hiawatha fire departments also responded.

The driver of the vehicle was injured and transported to the hospital. There's no details about the driver's condition.

According to Waldron, the fire took place outside the protected area of the plant and has no impact on the nuclear safety or safety to the public.

An alert has been issued at the facility, meaning it's a minor issue but requires some emergency response."

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System, or MABAS, partners with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency to plan and provide emergency resources in the event of a disaster.

MABAS Division 31 was asked to send a decontamination unit to Marion to help with flood disaster relief efforts. Nineteen fire departments, including several from our area, comprise MABAS Division 31.
