(OP) User ID: 1363247 United States 05/04/2011 02:00 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Phoenix 2012 Forum Administrator It has been 25 years since Halley's Comet last passed through the inner solar system, but an annual meteor shower keeps the icy wanderer's legacy on Earth alive this week. Halley's Comet takes roughly 75 years to circle the sun, but if you're 30 years old or younger, you either have little or no memory of this famous cosmic vagabond's 1986 trip by Earth. And your next chance will come in the summer of 2061. But if you don’t want to wait until 2061, you might want to step outside before sunrise during these next few mornings and try to catch a view of some "cosmic litter" that has been left behind in space by Halley's comet — a summer display of "shooting stars.".... |

For the last two months, almost all the planets have been hiding behind the sun, but this week they all emerge and are arrayed in a grand line above the rising sun. Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter are visible, and you can add Uranus and Neptune to your count if you have binoculars or a small telescope. This sky map of the six planets shows how they should appear at dawn to observers with clear weather and an unobstructed view. Astrologers have always been fascinated by planetary alignments, and the doomsayers of 2012 have been prophesying a mystical alignment on Dec. 21, 2012. The modern tools of astronomers, such as planetarium software, show otherwise: absolutely no alignment at any time in 2012. But they also reveal a beautiful alignment visible during the month of May this year. [Planet Skywatching Guide for 2011] [link to www.space.com] MORNING PLANETS: The Great Morning Planet Show of May 2011 is underway. Every morning for the rest of this month, you can see a beautiful gathering of four planets in the eastern sky. They are Mars, Jupiter, Venus and Mercury, shown here on May 1st over Magnetic Island in east Australia: "This is beautiful sight before dawn," says photographer Liz Gleeson. "Venus and Mercury have been visible for a couple of weeks, but now Mars and Jupiter have joined them for a four-way conjunction." An animation from Sky & Telescope shows what is in store for the rest of the month. The quartet of worlds will rearrange themselves on a daily basis, forming different shapes in the pre-dawn sky. The best mornings are the ones around May 11th, when Venus and Jupiter converge to form a tight pair. They are so bright, they might fool you into thinking you've witnessed a double supernova beaming through the morning twilight. But, no, it's just the two brightest planets in our own solar system. Stay tuned for a whole month of morning marvels! [link to spaceweather.com] |

(OP) User ID: 1363247 United States 05/04/2011 02:17 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Nailer45 User ID: 1369126 United States My wife came home through Marion today after work and when she got home she told me what she had seen in Marion Illinois.. This was around 7pm tonight. The National Guard or Army is set up at the old Wal Mart parking lot with 2 Decontamination units ( red trailers marked decontamination ) and they flood lights set up ( daytime so not in use ) and 7 other tents set up and equipment.. There were also police vehicles from Loves Park and Illinois state police , and a red semi trailer marked Illinois terrorist unit.. area was cordoned off where no civilians could enter.. They have been there since last saturday and saturday the decontamination units were not there.. The Voice In Your Head User ID: 1369165 United States Well....I live in NW Illinois.... I know that Illinois is included in the 2011 National Level Exercise which is supposed to "simulate the catastrophic nature of a major earthquake in the central United States region of the New Madrid Seismic Zone"(as found on the FEMA release). Outside of that and the incident at WIU (which has not been covered in any extent by any of the newspapers I have read for my area) not a whole lot to speak of. Only thing that stands out in my mind is that even before they decided to go way over the top with the explosives at Birds Point I have noticed that people seem really on edge. I find it terribly odd that any cars from the Loves Park (located right by Rockford) police department would be in Marion....since it is a good little distance away. I have a recently retired State Trooper in the family....he's a good man, and was a good cop (not like the guys you see that are so quick to beat or taze or shoot somebody). If any big shit is going on that the family needs to be aware of, he keeps us in the loop. And, in addition to that, I read and scan for news like a son of a bitch just to stay out ahead of any nasty things. So...Keepin my eyes and ears open....I'll let ya know if I hear or see anything "off". Last Edited by Isis7 on 05/04/2011 04:46 AM |

GLP Observatory Project: The Domes Are Up... ^TrInItY^ [link to www.godlikeproductions.com] All the big tubes are up and landed. It is fully up and in place. It's awesome man. So far it has really been good. There is nothing we haven't been able to overcome. The dome is like the biggest on earth. The small domes are pretty much commercially available. The big one is proto-type. Motors - asap. Full automation/ motors issue. Rotomoto plastic dome. The larger dome is the only one of it's kind at the time when we bought it. (sold it in Sept. but waiting for the weather to break/ trade show coming up. Talked the dude into selling the one he had/ said he had to beat him into doing the deal) What are gonna be the capability of the small one - guy told him there were less than 20 of them on earth that was in 2008. Probably about 12 on earth, and maybe far less than that. Get this, we got the only one in stock on earth. We have tapped that guy when it comes to the instructions/ hands on/ nut n bolts kinda thing. We have a wireless bridge. We're gonna use solar panels to run the main power, we some smaller ones to charge the motors on the doors, to rotate on the doom. We need to have that power supply to charge the battery to open the doom door. We are really at the root level automation... Backyard program that we are thinking of throwing out and putting our own in. Thinking of coming up with our own system/ streamline the set up. We will see a lot of that in the future. We have a magazine that loads different filters that take a series of photos depending on how many layers. We will have automated magazine. With this filter set up: Red, Green, Blue, Illuminance filters. The Illuminant filter isn't a nebula filter / 5 one minute exposure @ five each, then stack a layer of them. Long exposure, deep light saturation. SBI G System it's like a $7000 system. We got a great deal. This is how these astro-photographer's do this. It takes a really long time to / SHR1 50 seconds in 3 minutes, SHR 2, SHR 3 all different timing of processing and be able to image these deep galaxy. You'll be able to do all these really great photos. So that everyone can do it. Good 5 minutes, Better 10 minutes, Best 15 minutes, Excellent 20 minutes. Three clusters of three sets of scopes, and the medium scope, and for deep sky the big one. Will have a Chat. Will have to reserve 15 minutes of time. You can reserve 15 minutes each for three days in a row to complete a project. We will have different time allotted for different projects. Note: My typing isn't as fast as he was talking, I missed so much, but this is a good idea of some of the wonderful things they are doing. I hope I didn't get anything wrong, just take it with a grain, ok? Last Edited by Isis7 on 05/04/2011 03:07 AM |

(OP) User ID: 1363247 United States 05/04/2011 03:26 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | New York Times More Nervous Than Ever In New York Even If Bin Laden Is Dead Call it "the soundtrack of Terror New York." Usama bin Laden is dead now. What are we supposed to do? Feel a sense of satisfaction, of course. That’s only natural. Accept the circle of revenge. But in practical terms, no one can possibly know what is coming next – or when. And no one has devised a reliable method for protecting us from it. But in times of anxiety like this one, everyone wants to do something. So the NYPD Air Force takes to the sky. We understand you can’t protect everything forever, not in a city as a open and busy and fluid as this one. And here’s the really frustrating part: Most of the things we can think of to do won’t actually protect us against the most likely threats. You know the ones I mean. A bomb in the subway. Another office-building take-down. Something very scary from the sea or the air. How will X-ray machines at the airport protect us from any of that? How will guest sign-ins in the office lobbies? How will police helicopters in the sky? They won’t. They can’t. At a time like this one, what else do you have? more at link: [link to www.foxnews.com] |

With the settlement, "The intention was to be as comprehensive as we can to address the pipelines of the type that gave rise to this kind of corrosion problem," said Cynthia Giles, assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Enforcement. The settlement "also provides for an independent monitor to evaluate BP's compliance." But BP's battles with the government in Alaska aren't over. Tuesday's settlement comes as BP awaits a court hearing in September, during which the Justice Department will ask a judge to punish BP even more, after a November 2009 North Slope spill of 46,000 gallons. At that time, the Justice Department maintains, BP was still on criminal probation from the 2006 spills. [link to seattletimes.nwsource.com] |
