With Jalaka, Jambhira and Baitarani rivers remaining in spate following incessant rains for the last couple of days, flash floods hit parts of Balasore, Mayurbhanj and Bhadrak districts on Saturday. This is the third flood in the region in less than two months. While several houses collapsed and hundreds of acres of paddy fields got inundated, roads remained cut off in rural areas disrupting vehicular communication and power supply was snapped for hours in many areas including Baripada. Nine persons of a family in Jharadihi village under Bahalda block in Mayurbhanj district had a miraculous escape after a portion of wall of their house collapsed. The mishap occurred when the family members of Gayamani Murmu were asleep in their two-room house. “We escaped unhurt as the wall collapsed in the opposite direction. The walls of our tile-roofed house were damaged in the torrential rains. Now we have taken shelter in a temporary shed. I appeal the administration to provide us relief and house damage assistance,” Murmu said.

Official sources said Jambhira river was following above the danger mark at Rasgobindpur in Mayurbhanj district, followed by Jalaka river near Mathani in Balasore district and Baitarani river at Akhuapada in Bhadrak district. Jalaka was flowing at 6.14 meter mark against its danger level of 5.5 meter. A met official from Baripada informed that the town had received nearly 97 mm rainfall in just one hour breaking all previous records and causing water logging in several parts of the municipality area. “This quantity of rainfall was not witnessed in at least last two decades,” he said. Communication to several villages remained cut off as floodwater was flowing on the Jashipur-Raruan, Champua-Raruan, Sukruli-Chadheisol roads in Mayurbhanj while bus services to Baliapal in Balasore district was disrupted as the floodwater of Jalaka inundated the Gandhi Chhack-Baliapal State Highway near Pejagala slope. Large areas of paddy fields and 20 villages in Basta block of Balasore district have been affected due to the flood in Jalaka river. The flash flood in Jambhira also has hit 10 villages of Rasgobindpur and Amarda areas.

Reports from Raruan said huge quantities of fertilizer and official documents were damaged as floodwater gushed into the premises of a Large Area Multi Purpose Society (LAMPS). While around 80 villages have been affected in Sukruli area, walls of many houses damaged as floodwater entered into the habitations. Similarly, parts of Dhamnagar and Bhandaripokhari areas in Bhadrak district have been affected as Baitarani river has been in spate for the last 24 hours. Around ten villages in both the blocks have been affected and road links to these areas cut off. The district administration has deployed teams of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) in the vulnerable areas for relief and rescue operations while block officials have been deputed to the affected areas to monitor the situation. People residing in the villages close to these rivers are scared a lot as heavy rain triggered by a depression has been forecast in next 36 hours.

A mini tornado is believed to have caused damage to houses in Maungatapu ripping tiles of roofs and causing trees to fall as wild weather hit the Bay of Plenty last night and this morning. Firefighters were called to Haukare Street, Hairini, at 6am today and are still at the scene after it is believed a mini tornado caused damage to houses in the street. "There's been some sort of mini tornado and a few trees down, says a Northern Fire Communications shift manager. "There are also some tiles off houses, so we're just helping put the tiles back on the roofs." No one was injured. Greerton Fire Brigade is still at the scene. A caller to 0800 SUNLIVE says there is about eight houses with major damage to their roofs down the bottom of Haukare Street. The caller, who lives on the street, says luckily his house came out okay but others are not so lucky. There is just rubbish everywhere, he says. Strong winds are believed to have forced a trampolione from about eight houses down on to his property. He says firefighters are putting tarpaulins on the roofs of about eight houses after trees fell on top of them.

Yellowstone rattled by three ‘unusual’ earthquake swarms

September 24, 2013 – JACKSON, Wyo. — Until recently, Bob Smith had never witnessed two simultaneous earthquake swarms in his 53 years of monitoring seismic activity in and around the Yellowstone Caldera. Now, Smith, a University of Utah geophysics professor, has seen three swarms at once. “It’s very remarkable,” Smith said. “How does one swarm relate to another? Can one swarm trigger another and vice versa?” Because concurrent swarms have never been detected in the past, the answers aren’t in yet, Smith said. The geophysicist said he “wouldn’t doubt” if at least two of the events were related. Temblors from the three quake swarms mostly hit in three areas: Lewis Lake, the Lower Geyser Basin and the northwest part of Norris Geyser Basin. The largest earthquake shook the ground near Old Faithful Geyser on Sept. 15. The epicenter of the magnitude 3.6 quake, the largest in Yellowstone in about a year, was just 6 miles to the north of Old Faithful. “Generally speaking it needs to be 3.0 or higher for individuals to feel it,” Yellowstone National Park spokesman Al Nash said. Yellowstone’s recent earthquake swarms started on Sept. 10 and were shaking until about 11:30 a.m. Sept. 16. “A total of 130 earthquakes of magnitude 0.6 to 3.6 have occurred in these three areas, however, most have occurred in the Lower Geyser Basin,” a University of Utah statement said.

“Notably much of seismicity in Yellowstone occurs as swarms.” Including smaller events that have not been verified, there were many more quakes, Smith said. The recent swarms produced roughly four quakes that were large enough to feel. The first, a magnitude 3.5, struck Sept. 13 about 17 miles northeast of West Yellowstone, Mont. Then, in the early hours Sept. 15, two quakes, a magnitude 3.2 and magnitude 3.4, were detected in quick succession at 5:10 and 5:11 a.m., about 15 miles southeast of West Yellowstone. The magnitude 3.6 that marked the peak of the swarm struck nearby about 4 1/2 hours later. “They weren’t big earthquakes,” Smith said, “but they were felt.” About half a dozen earthquakes are felt in Yellowstone in an average year, he said. “This is pretty unusual, to be honest,” Smith said. None of the recent quakes, Nash said, were strong enough to cause damage or throw off the cycle of the Old Faithful geyser’s eruptions. “We know that a significant enough earthquake in the region has potential to alter geyser activity,” the spokesman said. “A strong enough earthquake, like the one that occurred out at Hebgen Lake in 1959, did change the interval of Old Faithful eruptions.” That quake, a 7.3 to 7.5 on the Richter magnitude scale, caused nearly 300 features on the Yellowstone landscape to erupt, 160 of which had no previous record of geysers. Smith traced the three recent earthquake swarms to the Hebgen Lake quake. “We think that much of the seismicity is still aftershocks from that event in 1959. Quake kills 45 in Pakistan, creates new island in sea

QUETTA, Pakistan - A major earthquake hit a remote part of western Pakistan on Tuesday, killing at least 45 people and prompting a new island to rise from the sea just off the country's southern coast.

Tremors were felt as far away as the Indian capital of New Delhi, hundreds of miles (kilometers) to the east, where buildings shook, as well as the sprawling port city of Karachi in Pakistan.
