Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1319826Shouldn't EVERY home be REQURED to have a basement/underground shelter? Or a COMMUNITY shelter or a shelter that can house 50 people within a zone where 50 people live? Neighborhood underground bunkers? Seems completely logical! I'm shocked these people don't ALL have access to underground shelters by law. Yeah.....and isn't it a bad idea to build a city on the coast under sea level....and isn't it a bad idea to build a bunch of nuclear reactors on fault lines. But sure, the government should require people to be able to take care of themselves if need be. Like having insurance if they are sick. Sorry, I got a bit off topic. All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent. Thomas Jefferson |

You want a nanny state? If people who live in areas like that don't take proper protective measures, then that is their responsibility. I am tired of government "requiring" me or anyone to do things we should have sense enough to do ourselves. |

Neighborhood underground bunkers? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1319826They have something like that, don't they? In some parts. But the likelihood of a tornado hitting your house is pretty low. The path of destruction for a tornado is usually narrow. 99.9999% of buildings in tornado alley make it through the season just fine. |

Will it really help? Floors are usually only made of wood. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1292002Looks like most of the upper floors were sheared off. Yeah, from what I've heard, in a tornado the house is not so much likely to collapse but more likely to lift up / blow away. |

The places these tornadoes are appearing some of them have never had a tornado. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 769657That's what I was just thinking... you need a basement everywhere now. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 397079 United States 05/24/2011 08:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Most do… There are tornado shelters everywhere; everyone has a basement for the most part. And there are protocols and alarms that are tested weekly. I wake up to a tornado alarm every Monday mourning because that’s when they do a test. But sometimes when the news says “well there’s gonna be a storm today” then 5 minutes later your being tossed across town by a tornado only to land next to a TV and they say “oh yeah and a tornado to…” it catches you off guard a bit. There are inherent natural disasters in every terrain, I suppose the people being killed by tsunamis are stupid or living near the beach, or people living on the ground are stupid for not having the ability to fly away in case of an earth quake. How about you shut you dumb ass up OP and get a clue. The Government can’t do any more about it then anyone else. Plus they suck so who would want there help anyway. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 858828 Canada 05/24/2011 08:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | you need to have a cement slab covering the basement space Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1171461All homes from Texas north have slabs. Almost no one has a basement because they claim the soil isn't good for basements. I say bullshit. If I had one of those dumps Id cut out a hold in the slab close to the backyards and dig a hole for stairs to a safe room under ground. That's just me though, what do I know. At least Ochimpo is having a good time. |
