Songda’s winds increased to 150 miles per hour, the U.S. Navy Joint Typhoon Warning Center said on its website. The storm’s eye was east of Aparri in the Philippines at 8 a.m. today, the center said. Songda was moving northwest at 19 kph and is forecast to turn to the northeast and cross the island of Okinawa by 9 p.m. local time tomorrow before heading for Honshu.

The center’s forecast graphic includes a possible path over Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant, which has been spewing radiation since March 11 when an earthquake and tsunami knocked out cooling systems. Three of six reactor buildings have no roof after explosions blew them off, exposing spent fuel pools and containment chambers that are leaking.

“We are still considering typhoon measures and can’t announce detailed plans yet,” Takeo Iwamoto, a spokesman at Tokyo Electric Power Co., said by phone when asked about the storm. The utility known as Tepco plans to complete the installation of covers for the buildings by October, he said.

After being a super typhoon for more than a day, Songda has been downgraded to a typhoon as it weakened slightly Friday.

Sustained winds weakened to 145 mph, which prompted the downgrade. Winds are gusting to 170 mph.

However, this curved path could take the storm directly over Japan's Ryukyu Islands and dangerously close to Okinawa as a formidable typhoon with winds near or over 100 mph.

This should not be a surprise. They had an old design for a reactor, one with known problems in it's own design. Add in that it was built in a highly active seismic area that was too close the the ocean to protect from Tsunamis that they knew could happen. And to top it off, they have been repeatedly caught with safety and operational violations. The emergency plan they had on record was ONE PAGE. They have no business running a nuclear reactor but have been allowed to get away with serious errors for all these years. I'm sure they have NO plan to deal with a typhoon.

Songda is weakening. But, the rapid forward speed of the typhoon means it will maintain most of its intensity before impacting southern Japan.

Wind gusts to 80 mph and 4-8 inches of rain can be expected across southern Japan.

Tokyo will have wind gusts to 60 mph. Sunday night (local time) as Songda passes. Rainfall of 3-5 inches is expected in Tokyo.
Further north across the tsunami ravaged areas, heavy rain is possible. Sendai could have three to five inches of rain. Wind gusts may top 40 mph.
