Quoting: AlasBabylonGod was married to Israel in the Old Testament, but divorced Israel her because of her pagan infidelity and Israel was sent away to live with her pagan lovers. The bride God marries in the New Testament is Israel.... not a replacement, but the same Israel. To understand why God incarnated and died for Israel, one must understand that under the Law of God, once a divorced woman becomes the wife of another man, her first husband can not remarry her. Jesus, God incarnate, died to break the old marriage covenant, so He and Israel could remarry. . I'm having trouble following your train of thought on this one AlasBabylon. I have spent a substantial amount of time in the bible and haven't come away with what you are illustrating. Would you mind elaborating some more, or perhaps provide a link with some reference material to help me learn some more about what you are talking about? God's Law says once a man divorces his wife and she leaves to become a wife of another, her first husband can not remarry her. Deuteronomy 24:4 Jeremiah 3 God was married to Israel. God divorced Israel " If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and marries another man, should he return to her again? Would not the land be completely defiled? But you have lived as a prostitute with many lovers would you now return to me? declares the Lord. " * " I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries. " * " Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you... " God could not lawfully remarry Israel. But when God incarnated and died, the old marriage covenant was broken, and Israel [the same Israel, not another] became the Bride of Christ. Jesus Christ, the passover lamb of God, died for Israel. As Jesus said: " I came only to the lost sheep of Israel." . Last Edited by AlasBabylon on 05/29/2011 01:50 PM |
