Well this is interesting.... [link to m.journalstar.com]

I won't even grace this post with any snips...just go read for yourself.

from the article: Schieffer said Cooper is designed to withstand winds up to 300 mph and a 1 million-year flood.

With the floodwaters licking at the edges of the plant now, does that mean that the Missouri River is having a million-year flood event?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1423308

My point is that it is the same type of plant and how odd that the folks from these same two plants were chosen to assist with Fukishima and now these two plants are in danger of the flood waters and power issues.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1426807

Yes, I took your point on that as well. As I read the article I thought it an extremely odd coincidence that the two US plants in trouble were the ones sending help to Fukushima. But I saw that the article was posted on March 15, well before the flooding, and wrote it off as just that, a coincidence.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1423308

Well that is one hell of a coincidence.

The Cooper Nuclear Power Plant has had a history of problems for several years; never quite up to snuff for standards. This next linking article describes a problem in 2010 with a "refusal to cooperate." [link to crisisjones.wordpress.com] "

“An NRC Information Notice subsequently issued nearly a year later (NRC IN-94-27) indicated that below grade rooms in the reactor and turbine buildings had extensive leakage with rising water levels. The notice stated that 'the floor drain system had backed up so that standing water from within areas known to be radiologically contaminated had migrated out into designated clean areas.'1 The NRC inspectors noted that plant personnel 'had not established measures to divert the water away from important components.' For example, water levels rising inside the reactor building impinged on electrical cables and equipment such as the Reactor Core Isolation Cooling (RCIC) pump room causing the circuitry to ground out."

Wow..this is good news if you can believe it..

Both nuclear plants in Nebraska are designed to withstand an earthquake with a magnitude of about 6.0.

Schieffer said Cooper is designed to withstand winds up to 300 mph and a 1 million-year flood.

Fort Calhoun is built to withstand winds up to 500 mph and a 1,000-year flood, Bannister said.

Doom over??
 Quoting: RTS

I'm confused by your post....

1. Didn't the fact that the two companies asked to assist at Fukishima are responsible for the two Nuclear plants in question at this time?

snip> NPPD has been involved in daily conference calls, along with top officials from Entergy Nuclear Inc., the company that operates Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville in Southeast Nebraska.

OPPD owns and operates Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station about 19 miles north of Omaha. Both nuclear plants were built in the 1970s and are on the Missouri River.

2. The article states that the plants both have the same designs. Yes they are saying the two Nebraska plants are upgraded, but who knows the truth.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1426807

Heard from my RR buddy that the levee has blown! Not sure if this is going to affect the plant, but he's keeping me updated on whether the rail line gets taken out.

Fort Calhoun has six high power lines feeding it - some coming off of a high hill adjacent that comes into the plant at a high angle (hence the no fly zone). Any one of those lines intact will fully power the cooling pools (per the press report in Council Bluffs IA newspaper). They also have generators and onsite fuel to last longer than a month. As to water they have several systems including sophisticated (flood proof) giant sandbags and a "water dam" that could hold back twice the current flood level. So baring a tsunami from a dam break all is well - IMO. They got their asses handed to them a year ago on the flood preps they had so they had been working on it all year - very providential. Don't believe all of the spin out in the blogosphere - I drive by the plant on my way into work every day and live downwind of the plant and have rad detectors - everything has been normal so far.

It is less of a coincidence if one buys into the idea that weather modification of some sort had a hand in the "million year" floodwaters putting pressure on all the dams and levees in the area.

The Brownville plant is currently producing 30% of the power for the area because the Calhoun plant had been shut down for refueling, and the Fort Calhoun plant is completely surrounded by water. The two nuclear plants augment production from the coal plants that produce a majority of power for the region. [link to www.time.com]

The coal plants. Here is a picture of one of the coal plants sitting next to the river. Locals here can look at this picture and tell you that this plant is surrounded by water for now. For some reason, there has been very little reported about the coal plants despite the fact that they are facing the same type of flooding.
[link to www.sourcewatch.org] (coal plant before the flooding) Two of the coal plants that produce fuel for the Omaha area sit right next to the river. The area surrounding these coal plants are completely flooded. Parks nearby are closed as well as nearby roads. Two weeks ago on a sunday drive to view the rising water we were told by an employee in the coal plant that people were being sent home due to flooding. What’s interesting is that if you google information about flooding and the coal plants, there are no stories. Zero to report. If you find one, share it please. I worked in diesel power plants 9 years as either operator or foreman. It is almost a sure bet that the fuel tanks are underground so that the fuel does not get too cold in winter. My concern would be water getting into the fuel tanks. Happens a lot.
