The quake struck at a depth of 36km, 161km from Enarotali, at 9.16 pm local time (10.16pm AEST), the US Geological Survey said. There was no warning or advisory posted on the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre website. Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity, and is frequently hit by earthquakes. In breaking news from news.com.au , they sometimes report a strong equake around Australia, and sometimes they add the bit about Indonesia, although We know it is closer to PNG. What is strange to me, and I've been watching the equake sites and GLP for over 3 months now, is that this cluster started in the Mariana Islands, then Honshu, then PNG. Is there a connection there? Wondering, and just watching. (but I have to go to bed soon! back to work tomorrow) stay safe : ) |
