JAPAN EXPECTING OVER 3 FEET OF RAIN FROM TYPHOON!!
(snip)

Total rainfall from slow-moving Typhoon Ma-on could exceed 1,000 millimeters on the Pacific side of western and eastern Japan, the agency said. Northeastern Japan, hit by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, and the Hokuriku region facing the Sea of Japan may also experience heavy rain as the typhoon approaches, it said.

The village of Umaji in Kochi Prefecture saw record rainfall for a 24-hour period of over 860 mm and total rainfall has already exceeded 1,100 mm.

Thanks OP, this thread is much more informative than the crap currently pinned. Looking at that forcast map, it looks very bad as its going to impact a sizable amount of japan. Land weakens typhoons, but warm seas strenghten them. So this beast is keeping some water under him and will take a while to weaken depending on sea temperatures. I see it will end up in tokyo, that is not good at all. I hope they are prepared. This looks like one very strong typhoon.

Except this time, the northern half of Honshu has suffered a huge series of earthquakes, and there is a radioactive catastrophe still underway.

But, other than that, sure.

it's now officially a Category 4..

Saturday, 16 July 2011, 08:06 CDT

The eye of a tropical cyclone is an indication of a strong storm, and Typhoon Ma-on's eye was apparent in visible and infrared imagery captured by NASA's Aqua satellite. Ma-on just achieved Category Four status on the Saffir-simpson scale that measures hurricane intensity.

It's not going to hit Fukushima at all, but the huge, well-organized multi-level winds will take all the radiation, and move it with it as it goes along. The Summer Pattern East to West Prevailing Winds seem to be pushing it to Kamchatka.

Folks there should take heed. Bring in the kids, the livestock, and, of course, the tomato plants.

the last Typhoon basically did exactly the same thing but fizzled out to a tropical storm and didn't do much damage..(it went further W then this ones predicted to do and hit the Southern tip of Japan first before racing the length of the country and on to Alaska )

they're predicting Ma-On to be much worse from the looks of it..
