The Controversial Thread Of The Day!
Population growth (or anything for that matter):

The formula is 70 divided by the annual percent.

7% growth rate means a doubled population growth in 10 years.

Current rate is actually getting pretty low: 1.1% annual growth rate.

70/1.1= 63.4 years, there will be 13.86 billion people on the planet (6.93+6.93).

******
The problem is not a land issue. There's plenty of land, and plenty of sunlight (solar energy). People could live above ground, underground, or anywhere they choose to live so long as they are prepared to live independently of the globe.

The problem isn't an oxygen issue because if people grow their own foods, the oxygen can come from the plants (ie- bamboo and aloe vera).

So what is the main problem with population growth? It's not evil and it won't hasten the end of the world. It will hasten suffering for humanity. But if this isn't a land problem, then what is it?

I've already clued you in. It's the lack of farmers increasing to compensate for the population increase.

Soon enough, there will be food shortages, not due to lack of land, but due to lack of farmers and/or growers (hydroponics, and vertical growing systems, farms, greenhouses, etc)

******
The only other doomy thing about population growth is all that trash. Singapore created a "low impact" "eco-friendly" incinerator that could help with this, however certain things can't go in that. We would need to become more efficient!

We take oil from here to there to everywhere in semi trucks.

We could do something similar with things such as: body wash, shampoo, detergent, dish soap, any other non-consumable liquids (etc).

This would eliminate trash from soaps, etc. Instead of purchasing whole bottles of stuff, you just take your bottle to the store during your shopping trip and fill up the bottles that need filling. The grocery store would have a refillable bin for each product, which is what the semi truck would refill...instead of shipping in truckloads of other stuff, such as boxed items, etc.

Glass bottles/refillable bottles for soda and water. Refill at the store, and no need to waste as many plastics in this manner.

vehicle tires have many uses: earthship biotecture is one of those uses. (building homes with tires, since they are trash anyways, and trash is going to eventually take up entirely too much space).

This would not eliminate _all_ trash, but it would *help*

These are good ideas. how about reusable glass containers with plastic lids in place of plastic bags for fruit/veggies at the grocery store. also other food products could be distributed in the manner you are talking about for soaps

I can't imagine that I'm the first person to think of these things? In any case, you're right. Many food containers could be like this and glass is able to be reused and recycled.

It's beyond me that this isn't a status quo as of yet. It really should be. We can't (can't as in shouldn't) go sending off our junk into space. (lol)

This would be a deleterious way to think. It is good for France, but not so helpful for the rest of the world.

If an annual population growth is 1.1% as is the current number, there would need to also be an annual increase of farmers (and productivity), which as land increases, the chance for bad crops due to drought/natural and man made disasters, etc, increases as the surface area of farmland increases.

So if one person requires 1.2 acres for survival, with 13 billion people in the world (~2074 or sooner), that is 10.833 billion acres worth of food required.

[link to one-simple-idea.com]

There are only 6.25 billion acres of arable land....which decreases annually, and as mentioned above, lost in disasters.
