UPDATED 10/23/11: Earthquake activity from 1990-2011 charted. Pin for education!

I updated the figures on my computer today. The 4.0-4.99 activity has fallen just a smidgen. 5.0+ activity is virtually unchanged. 6.0-10.0 activity is up significantly. According to the iris database we have experienced 153 6.0-10.0 earthquakes so far in 2011 (as of sept 5). If you go back and look at my charts you will notice that is the exact amount we experienced in all of 2010. Remember, we experienced more 6.0+ earthquakes in 2010 than we did in any other year in the chart.

This means we have another 117 days left in 2011 to further build up this record breaking year of earthquake activity. My current projections put us at ~225 6.0+ earthquakes this year. That is a 68% increase year over year and 2010's activity was already ridiculously high.

A little good news for now...things seem to have slowed down some since my last update. Hard to believe since there has been so much activity in the us recently, but activity overall has dropped the last couple weeks. Lets hope that trend continues! Can i just say i will be glad when late september comes and goes so we will finally have this elenin hype beyond us...unless of course we get a giant quake, lol.

Just a short update for any who care. The graphs are virtually unchanged in their estimate for 2011 since my last update. 273 days of data for 2011 now, it's statistically implausible that there will be a significant deviation from what the graphs look like now.

Any revisions in estimates based on the activity the past week has brought? Cheers, thanks for the excellent thread.

I did an update in my figures early this week and activity had dropped SLIGHTLY. With these two 7.0s in the last week and the aftershocks that follow them i imagine we will see a slight increase. I am on my ipad now so i cant post any new graphs yet. I will do that tonight.

The AVERAGE earthquake is of a higher magnitude than it was just a decade ago.

I had posted some data a few months ago as well, extrapolating 2011 numbers. The results were shocking to say the least.

Nice work!! Found the 5.0 - 10.0 most interesting. Def showing a hugh trend... though technically "exponential." does seem to have gone a bit crazy since 2008... Kinda like everything else! Regards

Any chance of an update OP?

I was told a couple of years ago that the Richter scale had either been revised or superseded by a new scale which effectively reduced the apparent size of an eq by 1 point on the scale ie what we now call a 7 used to be called an 8, does anyone know if this is true or has a basis in fact?
