With our grids at 100% due to heat wave even a moderate geo storm could cause severe damage. The grid is basically a huge circuit with crappy breakers and few resistors, so if it is 100% and you introduce more amperage, which would be DC by the way, it will cause transformers to meltdown and in extreme cases the actual wires to melt. Imagine using a 22 gauge wir to connect a 2000w microwave, when you turn it on if the breaker does not trip the wir over heats from to many electrons on too narrow of a conductor and the heat produced melts the wire. Ok now for M vs X it is just like the EQ scale X1 is 10 times stronger than M9...... A direct hit from X10 on a with our shields ( magnetosphere)at 100% would zap most satellites and possibly some grids.... Now take shields o 50% add in over tasked power grid and it is a crap shoot.. A series of mid sized M flares with CMEs hitting in serial could o the trick... Bottom line not even the scientist know, it is all theory as we have not had these types of event in recent history.... Be prepared and you don't have to worry so much, just be alert and informed... Funny thing had a neighbor tell me he couldn't afford to prep, I said well if you didn't eat out 5 days a week, take a week vacation, an quit spending money on booze and cigarettes you could prep!
