Here in Ky there are underground sulphur springs of water that give off the rotten egg odor. I drank sulphur springs water until I left home for college. It's not that it's an unusual smell in and around these locations; it's that it's a smell that's traveling and showing up in places it's never been noticed before.

I'm living 40+ miles north of my childhood home and the sulphur smell began here about 5 years ago. To me it's an indication that ground water is being rerouted due to ?. I'm no geologist but would guess that it's due to underground movements of rock/dirt. Why? I don't know except to assume that it would be a natural thing to happen over a period of time.

Because of my personal experience with sulphur water I think I'm an expert on the smell of sulphur water. Pure sulphur water does smell like rotten eggs. It does not smell like chemicals.

I'm not concerned about the sulphur smells. There are other environmental smells that take that priority. One is the heavy chemical floral smell that's like funeral home flower arrangements and is pure nasty. The other smell is the one that makes the air smell like burning dirt, also very nasty. One more is the overwhelming smell of mold. Any of these 3 forces me to stay indoors because they burn the sinuses. Many people I know cannot smell anymore. My husband is one of those. I don't want to lose my sense of smell. I need it to survive.
