(ignore - old story) Most violent geomagnetic storm in 30 years to hit Earth tonight
Please ignore ... turns out it was an old story from 2003. Sorry!
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

I don't know how true this is, as it's not being widely reported. But if it's true, unplug everything you have tonight. As in dailymail.co.uk:

A huge mass of electrically-charged particles thrown out by a gigantic eruption on the Sun is due to strike the Earth tonight.

Scientists expect it to trigger one of the most violent geomagnetic storms ever recorded.

The result could be widespread power surges and even blackouts, disrupted TV and mobile phone signals, and broken down communication satellites.

At the same time the Northern Lights, normally confined to polar latitudes, may produce dazzling displays in the skies above southern Britain.

At least one satellite has already been knocked out of action by the storm. Japan's space agency said its Kodama communications satellite had been temporarily shut down after malfunctioning.

The solar flare that caused the eruption burst out of a sunspot at 10.54am yesterday.

Experts said it was the strongest flare seen in the past 30 years. The explosion caused a coronal mass ejection (CME) which is now speeding towards Earth.

But experts say that over the next two days the Northern Lights may be seen at latitudes as low as Florida and Texas -

Holy crap! Pin this!!ahhh

Buckle your safety belts it could be a bumpy ride!

I doubt anything will come of this but it defiantly has potential to do some damage. I just hope it doesnt knock out tv for sunday football.... LOL

The date at the top of that page is the site's time and temperature clock....not the date of the article which is from 2003.
The article keeps getting reposted as current because a lot of people mistake the clock for the article date.

Here's how it all turned out....BACK IN 2003....when it really happened:

Long article here:
[link to www.space.com]

small excerpt:
A major solar flare unleashed Tuesday punished Earth's protective magnetic field early Wednesday, but the planet and its high-tech communication systems appear to have largely weathered the worst of the storm. The storm shut down and possibly crippled an experimental communications satellite owned by the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), officials said. The satellite, called Kodama, went into a protective safe mode this morning. It is still able to communicate but officials left open the possibility that the craft is permanently damaged.

The space storm, perhaps the third most powerful on record while in space, packed the potential to have more effect than one in 1989 that knocked out power to an entire Canadian province.

"This is one of the largest space weather events I've seen in 30 years," Joe Kunches, lead forecaster for NOAA's Space Environment Center, said in a telephone interview.

The brunt of the storm, a coronal mass ejection (CME), hit at around 1 a.m. EST Wednesday, reaching Earth about 19 hours after it left the Sun -- several hours sooner than expected.

"This makes it one of the fastest CME's we have recorded and comes close to a record superstorm in 1859," said Paal Brekke, deputy project scientist for the SOHO spacecraft, which first spotted the event.

is it a coincidence that some people up in the north lost power the same time the cme hit?

No coincidence. The official explanation for the power failure was the CME hit.
