Why would a company manufacture something that becomes toxic after 1 year? What happens to these "filters" after they are used or expired? I'm assuming landfill?

Why can't this guy make a product that is less poisonous?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1492966

I see where you are coming from, however, that is part of what is so disturbing with this occurrence, not that the bags could become toxic after a certain time, but that so many have been ordered WITHOUT bids being put in - just ordered, no questions asked sort of thing.

The toxicity doesn't even seem to be on the agenda. They (Government) expect them to be used before their date is up.

Doesn't this disturb you??

Just a thought.. but if a mass part of the american population were to die, wouldn't it be easier to dispose of the bodies without bags?

Nice intro for a short story. You went a little over the top with this bit though.

The main concern I have, the body bags have anti-biotic properties and fire accelerates. One year after the date of manufacture, they will lose all effectiveness. The NBC filters about 5. After those dates, the filters (and body bags) will actually become much worse than useless... they will become toxic to handle and definitely dangerous to use.

I often wonder if the gov. can actually see into space time future events. Not that they can really do much about it, but they are able to see future events in some way. Then again, maybe I watch too much TV...

Anti-biotics, in general lose effectiveness after a year. NBC filters break-down and become toxic. It's all very basic science.

Hey OP, you said the last time this type of order was made and you posted the info was 1 to 1 1/2 yrs ago. Was it shortly after the BP disaster in the GUlf? If so, it may be related since the sea floor is cracked and leaking all over the place. My exhusband worked on the first spill an was called bk down there around 8-17-11. He confirms its leaking.

idk, there are so many things going on at one time its hard to keep up with them all.

The bags will only contain the smell for so long. Despite popular belief, even a fresh corpse stinks, and we all know it only gets worse as time goes on.

I don't want to really poke my nose into this topic, but I just can't resist.

I'm in the funeral industry, and deal with a lot of yucky, icky things on a daily basis. In the case of body bags, I'm wondering how much the contract is for, OP. I know that our bags cost a pretty penny, and that's just for private body removals and general body transportation. I've also encountered the "more flammable" and "accelerated" bags while doing a direct-to-cremation drop off.

If they're spending god knows how much just to waste money, I'd rather see them spend the money on something useful, than expensive, and unnecessary bags.

I know the question is directed to OP, but in all honesty, every-day use body bags are nothing more than cheap plastic tarp with a zipper, and maybe sometimes a cheap nylon handle. I have encountered (more than once, sadly), moving a body in one of these amazingly made bags (please note my sarcasm), to have it rip and the contents of my deceased new friend spilling out.

This thread has me more than intrigued, but I'd like to hear some numbers.

They're actually very common. Usually used when a corpse may have been exposed to a virus. In specific products, it can also assist in preventing rapid decomposition if the body needs to be examined. Usually in tandem with "cool bags," that help regulate the temperature inside until it can be stored properly.

Very similar to the bags you can buy at the store to help keep food cold.

Also, seeing the entire Eastern seaboard shifted yesterday, they are preparing for another one. a BIG one.
