Some astronomers predict the comet will disintegrate and not survive perihelion, its closest approach to the Sun." I don't thing that's goog for planet Earth.
It will probable shower us with lot of junk. when they say it 'won't survive perihelion', do they want us to believe an object 4 miles in diameter will simply POOF, vanish into thin air? or thin space, sorry.  do they REALLY think we're that stupid? what is the weight of material of a comet 4 KMs in diameter, material being SCATTERED in relatively close proximity to us, speaking in terms of space? well, they have a density of 0.6g per cubic cm on average, so that's 600 kilos per cubic metre, and there's 64 billion cubic metres in a comet 4 Kms wide, assuming it's a perfect square, of course.  anyway, by my very rough calculations, that makes 38 billion 400 million metric tons of stuff that 'won't survive'? I think it's safe to say that it isn't a perfect square, but the 'disintegrated' material out there will still be in the 10s of billions of tons. Even a TINY fraction of that hitting us would be pretty bad. nice.
