The next big budget battle: FEMA funding (looks like you're on your own for future natural disasters)...
"Washington’s never-ending budget battle threatened to snarl the recovery from Hurricane Irene as a top Republican said Monday that any federal aid will have to be offset by spending cuts elsewhere

"Yes there’s a federal role, yes we’re going to find the money. We’re just going to make sure that there are savings elsewhere,” Representative Eric Cantor, the No. 2 Republican in the House."

This is why I advocate and practice preparing for disasters on your own.

Don't expect the goobermint to help you.

Most big companies have realized that accidents cost them money, and have taken extreme measures to reduce those costs especially in our current economic climate.

The goobermint is no different, except that they cannot terminate the taxpayers or manipulate the planet (yet) to help their budget. All they can do, is shuffle the cards and attempt to shift costs elsewhere (like on to State/Local budgets).

This is why many crews and supplies were in place before the hurricane. It was an effort to reduce costs associated with recovery, and perhaps seek to break even or make a small profit.

With less funding for disaster relief, more responsibility will fall on the taxpayers as individuals whether you are capable of helping yourself or not.

Start prepping now. I'm not sure what doom may be in our future, but it is fairly obvious that it will be our personal responsibility that will see us through it, and that inept Uncle Scam won't be able to help anybody. hf

"What you have just said, is the most insanely idiotic thing I have ever heard. At no point, in your rambling incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul."

That's what insurance is for.
I buy homeowners and flood insurance.
Why should I pay tax to fix the losses of people who live on the beach or near rivers who didn't buy insurance?
Fuck them--they took an ininsured risk--their loss.
The FEMA money keeps rebuliding houses in the same risky locations where they wash away, over and over.
Stupid--and unfair to renters and "homeowners" with insurance.

I have insurance as well, but if the New Madrid popped big, it would e nice to have some federal assistance. There isn't a place on the planet that's immune to all danger from disasters, whether it be floods, earthquakes, fires, tornados, etc.

Insurance will not save your life in the short term.
