Re: NEW Wikileaks cable “CONFIRMS” EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFE
The amusing thing about this is that it'd be rather foolish to vehemently assert that there "definitely isn't" life on planets other than our own given the relative ease with which life has evolved on Earth. Pragmatism, however, isn't the point here.

The point is that this "lunatic fringe" will seize upon anything which they perceive to reinforce their opinions and ideals, with an absolute disregard for common sense.

Let us not forget that, despite a reputation somewhat to the contrary, diplomats and their underlings aren't totally devoid of a sense of humour. Let's consider two similar sentences:

"MAYOR MEETS AMBASSADOR, CONFIRMS EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFE"

and

"MAYOR MEETS AMBASSADOR, 'CONFIRMS' EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFE"

Now, I'm not familiar with the typograpic protocols where cable subject lines are concerned, but one can see how the minor variation demonstrated above can be taken to mean something rather different.

The grand irony being this thread's subject....

:)
