Cop Gets Busted With 10 Pounds of Weed; Gets a Slap on the Wrist

SAN FRANCISCO -- A former San Francisco County sheriff's deputy who was caught with a car full of marijuana in Arizona last year received a surprisingly light sentence thanks, in part, to support from the local sheriff’s union.

Deputy Salvador Alcala helped guard more than 600 inmates at San Francisco's jail in San Bruno for years, watching over men charged with everything from minor drug offenses to murder.

Two weeks ago, Alcala was fired because of an incident last spring that ended with him arrested in a different state.

The arrest took place in March 2010. Alcala was driving through Arizona near the New Mexico border when he was pulled over for weaving on the highway

The arresting officer said Alcala immediately made it clear he was a sheriff's deputy himself, flashing his badge.
