Be sure to include Metronidazole.....excellent for oral related infections......

Also called Flagyl, Metronidazole is good for parasitic and protozoal infections. So if you may have to drink contaminated water, this is a good one.

True but that is one serious antibiotic. They put me on it after my appendix ruptured and it made me really sick. It's intense for sure.

Opie, shhhhhh...this is an important secret. Share it but don't broadcast it.

Also the shelf life for most of the antibiotics is much longer than the label says (but for God's sake do your own research and don't take my word for it; I think tetracycline is dangerous once it expires but google for yourself).

You don't want to take tetracycline because it causes damage to the tooth enamel-yellowing of it-in children. That's why they stopped using it, at least in children.

Take some time to study online, different bugs require different antibiotics.
Take the wrong one when you needed a different kind and it won't work.

cipro works for nearly everything, to answer the persons question, it is the first and best choice for a limited budget

no need for overseas purchase due to order fraud or product fraud possibiliries.

thanks for the non input

You have to study gram positive and gram negative bacteria and which one causes what kind of infection.

Usually, skin and surface infections will be gram positive, but deeper tissue infections (ones where you don't get a lot of oxygen to the tissue or anaerobic) will tend toward gram negative.

Study that and then you need to learn about antibiotics as some are good for gram positive infections and some are good for gram negative infections. You can certainly learn how to perform a "gram stain" see here [link to en.wikipedia.org]

requires a bunson or similar burner,a metal "loop"-can be homemade, microslides, rubbing alcohol, crystal violet, gram's iodine and possibly safranin chemical mixtures and defo a microscope to see your results.

The fact is, though, that depending on location in the body, one can usually guess whether the infection is gram positive or gram negative-which is typically what doctors do and this can be learned pretty easily. Also, if there is a question, then one can use a broad spectrum antibiotic that is able to handle both gram positive and gram negative bacterial infections.

I am not a doctor or giving advice, just pointing interested people into the directions that I learned in microbiology and pharmacology. This is just for educational purposes and is NOT intended to replace the advice of a good doc.

I have a question regarding this post: According to my parents' neighbor, who owns a exotic pets shop, the Fed has passed a law about a year ago that requires some sort of additive in all pet antibiotics making them unsafe for human consumption. I cannot find any info online to either prove or disprove his assertion. Does anyone know anything about this?

PS: the tetracyclines can NOT be used after expiring--minocycline, doxycycline etc--you will get kidney failure from them if they are expired.

Are there any other "veterinary" medications out there i am unaware of that can also be purchased in this way? i assume pain killers are impossible to get no matter what because of all the druggies out there. Guess the best thing i can do for that is booze. But what about antivirals, anticoagulants, antifungals, anything else i am not thinking of? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Help me pick out SHTF Antibiotics for my ummm "FISH". Really good info inside!
So i am a prepper, i have taken care of almost everything i reasonably can. One thing that has scared the shit out of me though is my lack of medication. i have all the basic "over the counter" stuff but that only goes so far. the closest thing i had to antibiotics is heavy duty MRSA/Staff style neosporin. cant hurt but i obviously want much better than this.

I had heard the best thing to do was go to a doctor and tell them you are travelling to the Philippines to get them to prescribe you some Cipro but even that is not good enough. I want to be as prepared as possible and found out a MUCH better way to take care of this.

"Fish" antibiotics available at your local store/amazon are actually human pill form name brand antibiotics. The best part is they are CHEAP AS SHIT. Most of the cost in human antibiotics is for big pharma to make an asston of profit and protect themselves from lawsuits. The directions on these are to just crush them up and add them to the water in your tank. I guess people have known about this for years but i some how missed it in my research.

I have taken first responder classes and know how to deal with most common injuries all the way up to minor gun shot wounds, but in these classes the steps always are stop the bleeding, then get them to the hospital. we all know this may not be feasible in the future. So my question is, those with EMT/Nursing/Medical experience can you please help me pick out a broad range of antibiotics i might need?

You know in case my "fish" gets Shot, needs and amputation, is exposed to a new undocumented bacteria, gets pneumonia, has a urinary tract infection, giardia etc etc. Anything that might happen if say my "fish" needed to escape to his bail out location and not have access to "fish doctors". I plan on continuing my medical education and learning how to do blood transfusions, more field surgeries, etc etc. but there is no time like the present!

Here are some of the medications available right now online.

Aquatic Tetracycline 250mg. 100 Count Capsules, Antibiotic USP
[link to www.amazon.com]

Aquatic Azithromycin 250mg. 30 Count Tablets, Antibiotic USP
[link to www.amazon.com]

Aquatic Ciprofloxacin 250mg. 50 Count Tablets, Antibiotic USP
[link to www.amazon.com]

Aquatic Ampicillin 500mg. 50 Count Capsules, Antibiotic USP
[link to www.amazon.com]

Aquatic Doxycycline 100mg. 100 Count Capsules, Antibiotic USP
[link to www.amazon.com]

Aquatic Clindamycin 150mg. 100 Count Capsules, Antibiotic USP
[link to www.amazon.com]

Aquatic Ketoconazole 200mg. 50 Count Tablets, Antibiotic USP
[link to www.amazon.com]

Terramycin Opthalmic Ointment - 1/8 oz
[link to www.amazon.com]

Aquatic Sulfamethoxazole / Trimethoprim 800/160mg. 100 Count Tablets, Antibiotic USP
[link to www.amazon.com]

Fish Zole (Metronidazole) 250mg, 100 Tablets
[link to www.amazon.com]

Procaine Penicillin G - 250 cc
[link to www.amazon.com]

As you can see there are TONS of choices and i probably could find even more on a specific site that deals with this. I was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction as far as a basic list. Willing to drop a good amount of cash on this as these will be very important and no way to get them. Also potential value in trade would be huge.

Re: Help me pick out SHTF Antibiotics for my ummm "FISH". Really good info inside!
Two years after TSHTF even if you are the only survivor and all drug stores are stocked with all the antibiotics you can think of, none of them will do you much good.

At one year out from its manufacture date, the typical antibiotic (and many other drugs) kept in a cool, dry, dark place lose 10% of their potency thus are about 90% potent as their manufacture date. 2 years out they are down to about 50% of their potency, in less than 4 years they are are down to about 10% of their potency with a high potential to even be toxic with other chemical reactions slowly taking place inside each pill/capsule.

Antibiotics and other drugs are MORE potent during their early selling period. The manufacturer computes their effectiveness lower than they actually are, thus they are able to sell the drug longer, this is to cover the losses due to sitting on the self before sales.

Your best defense is a tetanus shot and keeping it updated. This will take care of one of the biggest infection from injury type killers in a post civilization world.

Second to that is sepsis. The best 'cure' is prevention.

Learn how to clean wounds, learn how to dress wounds properly, learn how to use alcohol to clean a wound.

Peroxide and medicinal alcohol have a shelf life of just three years. UNLESS they are in dark brown glass bottles. Then you can get another 2 years of useful shelf life, as long as they are kept in a cool, dry, cool place.

Your medicine cabinet is the worst place to keep medicines, including peroxide and alcohol. Showering changes the heat in the room a lot. If you have a pantry that is in a stable temperature area of the house, there is where you keep your meds.

Don't take antibiotics and you wont get MRSA
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1389551

i have a very healthy immune system. i eat all organic and cut myself all the time working on projects. i wont be taking these now. i just want them stored for me and my family in the future.
 Quoting: Anonymous Ameritard

ALWAYS check expiration dates, certain antibiotics become toxic when they expire.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1389551

Tetracycline was one of the few that turn toxic...most everything else was good for a decade to decades past "expiration" in the DoD drug aging study
