To me it seems like our space race is meant to look Neanderthalish so they can get away with pointing the finger and saying... "but look we can't do that, that wasn't us, it was a ufo, some alien race" ... When one of their top secret planes comes falling out of the sky... as has always prolly been the case...

don't forget the gold foil,it looks nicer,but really i think they just build them for what they have to do,balanced with a specific weight specification and price tag,they don't have to be aerodynamic or look great,just have to do the job they were made for.
