Russia backs Palestinian UN bid

A source from the Russian delegation at the UN General Assembly session told journalists that Russia will support Palestine's bid for full UN membership.

Following Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ emotional bid for membership for a state of Palestine in the United Nations on Friday, Moscow announced it will support the proposal if it comes up for a vote.

"If this issue is put to a vote, we will support it," the source said, as quoted by Interfax.

Abbas handed an application for Palestine’s membership in the international body to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for the territories governed by the Palestinian National Authority, the organization said in a statement.

The Palestinian appeal to the General Assembly comes after 20 years of failed peace talks sponsored by the US, Israel's main ally, as well as continued Israeli settlement expansion on land the Palestinians proclaim for their future state.

Palestinian authorities said they are confident the UN Security Council (UNSC) will consider their bid for fully-fledged membership in the UN within the next few days, Palestinian Ambassador to Moscow Faed Mustafa said.

U.N. Security Council to debate Palestinian state

The historic Palestinian bid for statehood goes before the United Nations Security Council Monday, where it looks set for a largely symbolic debate in the face of a promised American veto.

Lebanon's Nawaf Salam, the Security Council president for this month, said he circulated the letter of application to all 15 members of the Security Council last week.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas made the bid for the United Nations to recognize an independent state of Palestine on Friday, a move Israel says is premature without direct talks that address its longstanding security concerns.

The formal application drew applause in the assembly when the Palestinian leader raised the document at the podium during his speech at the 66th annual session of the General Assembly.

Looks like this might all be happening today. I'll see if i can find a time.

Russia will vote for Palestinian statehood at a Sept. 26 U.N. Security Council meeting, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in a CNN interview set to air on Sunday.

Russia will support, China will support.

Israel blocks, US blocks. (ie: we support the idea, but first we should have more talks about talks about negotiations to have meetings to begin talks...)

None of the above actually give a shit about those people.

It's all politics, it's all powerplays, "Palestine" is just the latest political football for the old skool boys to kick around and try to score points against each other.

You obviously fail to understand the point.

Everyone knows the US will veto.

That's precisely why Russia and China will back the bid.

Think it over.

Very true, but still something that should be followed in my opinion. I'm reading that a real vote could take weeks if not months and that they've only got 6 of the required 9 yes votes.

Something that's been on my mind is this: So the U.S. doesn't have to actually veto and look like an ass, how much will it cost us to buy the No-votes and/or abstaining from voting?
