EARTHQUAKE SUMMARY FOR OCTOBER 06, 2011

A pair of strong earthquakes occurred today in northern Argentina (M 5.8-6.2) and the Caroline Islands (M 5.8-6.0). These are the first such earthquakes of M>=5.8 since an event in Tonga on September 22 of M 6.2 and appear to have broken the two-week long seismic quiet period. Both occurred within 10 degrees of the local geomagnetic equator and were likely promoted by the geomagnetic storm which occurred yesterday.
