That fat you are using for your soap has very useful calories in it. Don't waste them on soap unless you already have full bellies. But if you are lucky enough to already have enough food, then yes, make soap, by all means. You will need soap to clean your dishes, your food, and your wounds. Without proper sanitation, many will die from easily preventable diseases, like dysentery and cholera. Lack of santitation will be a major problem, and many will die who didn't need to. |

Use the leaves and stems, heat in a enamel pan or stainless, makes a soapy mixture. Supposed to be for cleaning wool. Get some seeds and save, plus grow some in your yard, they are very pretty plants with a delicate pink flower!!! I also hear yucca root can be used as a mild cleanser. Problem is we don't know how long to prep for! Quoting: Planet Hopper That calls for knowledge of how to do the basics. I highly recommend the foxfire series of books. Everything from fence making, food storage, to soap making. Speaking of soap, how long till you run out if TSHTF? Do you know the basic ingredients? No? Lye Fat Water So where do you get lye? Order it on the Internet right? LoL Yes, most soap makers do just that. But in a shtf scenario with no electricity and no stores what then? How did our ancestors do this? It's simple really. Lye comes from ashes. Water is combined or poured over coals and ashes creating lye, which is very caustic btw. Fat from any fatty animal is boiled down (rendered), to similar temp of lye. Melted fat is combined with lye.. Detailed instuctions here: [link to www.grandpappy.info] Usually takes a few days to firm up enough to cut. I will fetch a few videos: Here's one in making lye 9lbs of fat and lye water made in the sun! crazy lady rendering fat (melting fat), which she bought 4 lbs of from a kill house. oh and if you want it scented, buy a few bottles of essential oils or fragrance oils. Essentials are very concentrated. If you want to be fancy, add some dye. Last Edited by Tango-NA on 10/15/2011 10:12 PM |

Take the pot off of the stove and let it cool.. the fat will rise to the top and solidify, the rest stays at the bottom with the water. Take the cooled fat out of the pan, (it lifts out as a solid) and continue your soap making process from there. If you have pork fat, you can put it in a fry pan and on a medium heat, melt the fat.. you'll find some chunky pieces in the liquid fat, drain the liquid fat to cool and continue to fry the chunks..add some salt, or seasoned salt.. keep frying till they get crispy ..Those crispy bits are mm mm good to eat. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1486940 United States 10/15/2011 11:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Who said anything about bathing itself? Quoting: Anonymous Coward Bathing is good maybe once or twice a week - soap is bad, even used once for anything. Bathing in FLOWING water is a necessity, bathing in a tub is just sitting in your own filth. A clean-water shower is all anyone needs. If you grew up like a NORMAL person you would have picked and eaten your snot when younger - ever think that is one way your body 'injects' itself with bacteria in order to IMPROVE the immune system? There is MORE bacteria under your fingernails DAILY than there is around a toilet seat, so if you pussies are so scared of germs then why not cut your fingers off!? Any fool that buys antic-bacterial soap and 99.9% killer soap are only destroying themselves and their family - they are NOT helping ANYTHING, why do you think the hygiene market is so strong. Stop eating so much disgusting filthy food as well and maybe your bodies won't pore out so much nasty smelling bacteria. All the rotting meat and fucked up junk food - eat healthy and suddenly your body is healthier and easier to manage - surprising, no? Obviously, i'm not saying be a dumb fuck and not wash - i'm saying wash, but don't use poison - like all the shampoo and body shit in which most of you can't even pronounce the first ingredient. All it takes is common sense. Wow, wouldn't want to sit next to THIS on a hot day |

Why do you need soap for - does any other animal need soap? Did you know soap was originally created when they found part of the river where babies get sacrificed cleaned clothes better!? Soap is also the leading cause of super-bugs in hospitals. It also ages and destroys people's skins. How do you think all these retarded skin care products stay 'important' to the zombie sheep. It just blows my mind still that so many people 'wake up' yet they continue to want and use what the 'enemy' has created. I wonder how many fools here have that new iPhone that was just released. Some of us are oily. We need our soap!!! |

User ID: 964647 United States 10/15/2011 11:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I also have a laundry soap recipe with the fels naptha. I use it all the time since I am a family of 8 and laundry soap is expensive. I put the oils you get from the dollar store for fragrance in it after it is all mixed. One batch makes enough for my family to use for about 4 months, and after buying the initial supplies, (about 10 bucks), you only need to buy the fels naptha. I estimate that I spend about a total of 15 bucks a year on laundry detergent. It works great too. Here is the recipe, hope you like it too. This is a copy/paste of the recipe I use. I got it off the web last year but have no idea where or who to give credit to. This recipe and others like it have been posted here but until now I hadn't taken the time to break it down and determine how much I need of each ingredient. The calculations are listed at the bottom. The Soap: The most typical type of soap to use is Fels Naptha. It is an old-fashioned type of soap usually found in the laundry aisle. The other options for soap are Ivory or another brand called, Zote. Any of these will work. If you use Ivory or your own homemade soap you will need to use the whole bar. Washing Soda: This is not to be confused with baking soda. They are not the same thing. Washing soda is sodium carbonate or soda ash (baking soda is sodium bicarbonate). It is a white powder. Its purpose is to help remove dirt and orders. The brand to look for is Arm & Hammer Washing Soda. I find it in the laundry section of my grocery store. Many people have a hard time finding this locally. I know you can purchase it on-line, even through Amazon.com. I would also suggest asking your grocery store manager if it would be possible for the store to get it for you. Borax: Borax is a naturally occurring mineral: Sodium Borate. It is a white powder. It’s purpose is as a laundry whitener and deodorizer. The brand to look for is 20 Mule Team. It comes in a 76 oz. box. You should be able to locate this in the laundry detergent aisle. Again as with the washing soda, if you cannot find it ask you store manager or look online. Homemade Laundry Soap 1/3 bar Fels Naptha or other type of soap, as listed above ½ cup washing soda ½ cup borax powder ~You will also need a small bucket, about 2 gallon size~ Grate the soap and put it in a sauce pan. Add 6 cups water and heat it until the soap melts. Add the washing soda and the borax and stir until it is dissolved. Remove from heat. Pour 4 cups hot water into the bucket. Now add your soap mixture and stir. Now add 1 gallon plus 6 cups of water and stir. Let the soap sit for about 24 hours and it will gel. You use ½ cup per load. The finished soap will not be a solid gel. It will be more of a watery gel that has been accurately described as an "egg drop soup" look. The soap is a low sudsing soap. So if you don’t see suds, that is ok. Suds are not what does the cleaning, it is the ingredients in the soap. That also makes it safe and better for septic tanks. If you want your soap to have some sort of scent you can scent this with ½ to 1 oz. of essential oil or fragrance oil of your choice. I buy the stuff from the dollar store in the little jars. Calculations: Washing Soda - 55 ounce box 1/2 Cup = 5 ounces Each box has 11 "servings" Borax - 76 ounce box 1/2 Cup = 3 ounces Each box has 25 "servings" Fels Naptha Each bar has 3 "servings" The items below will make 22 batches You'll need: 2 boxes of Washing Soda (22 full recipes) 1 box of Borax (22 full recipes + 3 extra servings) 8 bars of Fels Naptha (22 full recipes +2 extra servings) Also, I keep a spare whisk on top of my bucket because it does get "clumpy". Every time I refill my small/handy jug I give it a good whisk to make sure everything is evenly combined. And, as I do laundry I give my little jug a quick shake just to combine again Last Edited by flavapor on 10/15/2011 11:42 PM |
