Obviously you have not had any higher education. How could someone purposely pick a field in which there was zero chance of gainful employment?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3845746

How many students today get degrees in sociology or some liberal arts program and cannot find a job? How many will fork out tens of thousands of dollars at a private school for a degree in an industry where even if employeed they cannot afford to pay off their student loans? (such as retail and hospitality management). The fact remains that the ones bitching the most over "No Jobs" picked a career path which has zero job growth.

As for me, I am doing quite well, thank you.

This thread should be PINNED.

You would NEVER have to repay these loans.
At BEST you might pay back 10-20% of them.

Take this example: If Suzy Creamcheese gets into George Washington University and borrows from the government the requisite $212,000 to obtain an undergraduate degree, her repayment schedule will be based on what she earns. If Suzy opts to heed the president’s call for public service, and takes a job as a city social worker earning $25,000, her payments would be limited to $1,411 a year after the $10,890 of poverty-level income is subtracted from her total exposure.

Twenty years at that rate would have taxpayers recoup only $28,220 of their $212,000 loan to Suzy.

Good!

Education should be a right for all, regardless if you can afford it.

We will never make it as a nation without educated people.

Education is key to helping people get out of poverty, create new technologies, create jobs...etc.

Re: Today Obama Used His Executive Powers To Push Student Loan Reform
It's absurd that you can't go bankrupt on a student loan. I went bankrupt on mine on the advice of my accountant and my father (an accountant and president of a major port authority). At the time, my loan had ballooned from $9,000 to $13,000 in just two years, even though I was doing my best to make the $600 monthly payments being demanded from the schmucks telephoning me daily, sometimes 3 or 4 times a day, pestering me. I say "pestering" but "criminally harassing" was actually more the case. I had a nervous breakdown from their threats; at the time I went bankrupt, I was clearing around $800 a month working as a temp office worker (the only job I could get with my BA). My father had offered to pay a percentage (better something than nothing at all), but the bank wouldn't take the deal. That's when he told me to go bankrupt, and my accountant agreed.

I was the second-last person in Canada to go bankrupt on a student loan. That was in 1991. In hindsight, I believe that going bankrupt was the best thing I could have done, all things considered. After I got over my breakdown (took me about six months; my doctor put me on welfare, which, at that time, was the same monthly amount as what I was earning), I started to work for myself, and 20 years later I'm still self-employed.

Debtors should have the legal right to go bankrupt, regardless of the type of loan. To exempt student loans from that right is not right. This tithing thing (making them pay 10% on what they earn for the next 20 years) is galling. My advice to the debtors: JUST DON'T PAY. And in the meantime, fight for your right to go bankrupt.

Education should be free of charge for all - K through University. The next step Barry should take should be to actually wipe all student loan debt clean and eliminate tuition at all public education institutions, enforced through the Dept. of Education. If people really stopped and thought about how much they pay in taxes on everything they purchase, they would demand the things every normal society receives - education, housing, food, healthcare. Most who are opposed to moving the US in this direction are sociopaths.

Re: Today Obama Used His Executive Powers To Push Student Loan Reform
I think that if the USA as a country and a society does not do something immediately about availability of a higher education we as a nation will play a very secondary role in this world 20 years from now.

The absence of any control on the price tags that universities are putting on their educational services and a common practice of putting almost everyone into a dept of a $100K+ for using those services from the very start of their lives, combined with scarcity of jobs that do not require 4 years degree place a majority of current students generation in a third-world conditions from the very start.

India and China produce more top-level educated professionals then we have young population overall, and the governments in India and China finance higher education very aggressively, as they are financing the future of their nations.

Many on this thread are mentioning that philosophy, architecture and other degrees do not pay for themselves. OK - so how do you imagine US in 50 years - no thinkers, no architects, no nothing, just an utilitarian nation of consumers that will run out of any ability to purchase products produced in China and India? Other alternatives?

Banks are in business to lend..if they do not lend then people complain that it is not fair. It is a no win situation as far as loans go for college unless the people stand up and take responsibility for their own debt and make smart choices. No one told these people to go out an get a loan. If they feel it is necessary to go to college ..then work for it. Pay as you go..or get better grades , an internship or save for it while you are living at home. I have a son who right now holds down a job and goes to college. He pays for his classes as he is going and has no student loans and I do not pay for his college. The choice is his and his alone. I help him out by having him stay at home and contribute by working around the house and picking up Milk and items he can afford to help out with. I do agree that no one should bail out the banks..that is part of the risk of handing out money for people to use.
 Quoting: Mooshi Kin

A loan is by its very nature a risk. In the 90's, banks told colleges "Charge whatever you want, we'll loan it." College raised their rates 200-500%, and the banks kept their end of the bargain and began loaning the inflated amounts.

But the banks had a card they knew they could play when the bubble burst. They knew they had enough pull in the government, that would permit the banks to loan the government money to pay for their own bail out! Do you understand the significance of this?

This was a SCAM.
 Quoting: Jake101

But people still took the loans... So we should just forget about personal responsibility now because Sugar Daddy Obama is going to pay with tax money? Both sides are at fault... I still think you should pay your bills. I worked when I went to school because I didn't want a HUGE debt when I got done. Silly for me to be responsible...

No. The banks can try to collect the money from the people they loaned it to. That's how it works. At no point should the government, or you and I be involved. Son it is a consolidated loan scheme in the usual socialist communist something for nothing and this follows the lower interest rate hocus pocus and if you cannot pay the loan off well tough luck.

What is your thinking?

Bottom line jobs are getting harder to come by, people are reluctant to hire youth because of all their expectations, it is all take and no give on their side, and many jobs hire older people willing to work with the employer.

It boils down to fiscal responsibility and if you signed a legal contract, it is your responsibility to repay not the overburdened taxpayers.

Who will benefit from Obama's student loan plan?

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009: Information Center

 Quoting: SilverPatriot

Hear me out.

First off, remember if I loan you 20 dollars, with the final term value of the loan (assuming you took the full term to pay it back) of 80 dollars, the actual value of that loan is ONLY 80 bucks IF you pay it back.

Second, if I loan someone 20 bucks, then when he pays it back, it will be a VERY hard sell to get the government to pay me back the full term of 80 bucks UNLESS I can find a way to make it the government's fault.

So, the banks lobbied like madmen for the government to "force them" to loan to everyone, so that they had legal recourse to claim "It's not my fault!" when SHTF.

Specifically, they were able to sell and recoup loan packages for their FINAL term value, instead of actual value. It was a gigantic scam, that they NEVER would have done had they not know for 100% fact they would be immediately given the full term value for everything. They spent 100 billion, and then received trillions and trillions in return.

Re: Today Obama Used His Executive Powers To Push Student Loan Reform
...

Banks made stupid loans at the government’s bequest eventually all these students will be beholden to the government indentured slaves mean anything to you.

The banks WANTED to make these loans. They couldn't without the Reinvestment Act.

There is one and only one entity that made out well through all this, and that's the banks. There's a reason for that.

Is this what you are talking about and if so please tie in your thoughts?
