LEFLORE COUNTY, Okla. - A LeFlore County couple accused of child neglect and sexual abuse have pleaded not guilty.

They'll be in court Monday to determine if they qualify for a public defender.

In the meantime, the couple's nine children, ranging in age from three to 17, are in state custody. Court documents show that most of the children do not know the alphabet or how to count to 20.

The children told investigators they were homeschooled but couldn't explain what that meant.

Investigators have been searching the family's large rural property for the remains of a baby believed to have been born to one of the daughters.

She told authorities that her father helped deliver the child, he told her it was dead and buried the baby on the family's property.

The search for the infant's remains began Thursday. A LeFlore County couple was charged with child neglect in connection with the case after investigators found the couple’s nine children in “extreme physical and educational neglect,” police said.
