How Alexey Navalny is changing Putin's Russia

As an anti-corruption and anti-Putin crusader, Navalny's stature in Russia hovers somewhere between that of a rock star and a shadow president. "The party of crooks and thieves,” Navalny’s epithet of Putin's ruling United Russia, has become universal and Navalny himself is credited with providing both the brains and the spine that humiliated the party in Sunday's parliamentary election with a below-majority victory – a humiliation made starker by the fact that the election was rife with fraud.

RUSSIA’S NETWORKED ACTIVISTS SHIFT THE MOMENTUM AGAINST PUTIN

In the days and hours before the elections, hundreds of blogs and independent sites suffered DDoS attacks, overloading servers and forcing them offline. In response many mainstream bloggers and journalists began offering the use of their websites to broadcast content from the effected sites.

Alexei Navalny: the man who's got Russians ranting at Putin

Navalny is the charismatic 35-year-old lawyer who coined the phrase 'Thieves and crooks', taken up to describe Putin's United Russia party by the protesters who have flooded central Moscow over the past two days.

He was sentenced yesterday to 15 days in jail for supposedly 'obstructing' the police on Monday, as thousands of Muscovites began protesting against the results of the weekend parliamentary elections, widely believed to have been fixed.

All the Wrong Moves: Putin Plots His Strategy Against the Protesters

On Thursday morning, while the Russian opposition was busy preparing another wave of demonstrations in Moscow and more than 70 other cities, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin met with his team of imagemakers to discuss their counterstrategy. They chose to envision their dilemma as a game of chess. "We need to look at the chessboard," Putin said, "where all the moves are clear, both the white and the black." The opponent in this game, as Putin went on to explain, is not so much local opposition leaders, who this week organized the largest protests ever against his rule, but the "American partners" moving them around like pawns.

Saturday’s rally in Moscow over the State Duma election results has been moved from Ploshchad Revolutsii to Bolotnaya Ploshchad.

As a result, organizers have now been granted permission for up to 30,000 people to protest on Dec. 10 between 2 and 6 pm -- up from the 300 that were permitted at the original location.
