So you start a thread entitled Chinese father brags about beating children and come to find out the man is a disciplinarian that raise 4 highly sucessful children.

Kudos to a good father who used discipline to teach his children right from wrong and stayed on top of thier education to see them attend Peking University.

As for your love hate comment, We all have this kind of relationship with our parents to one degree or another.
Our parents are our best teachers, they teach us everything we want to be and also everything we do not want to be.

Beating your child because he did not hold a cup a certain way. Does that say love? NO.

Beating - please learn to define what this word means and the intent a person who is beating another is trying to cause. Discipline is punishment for breaking the rules.

You further show your lack of knowledge of the Chinese Education System. To say wow they got into a college, No not just a college. If you had the first clue and paid attention I told you Peking University is for the BEST of the BEST students!! Not the second best student in the class only the best and even being the best in your school is still no guarentee you can attend, Your test scores determine what university you are allowed to goto. This is not a system that coddles a 4th or 5th place student competition is fierce and the cream of society rises to the top and is nurtured. Losers are not rewarded.

Well, I meant it in the slang sense. Kids aren't trophies that parents put on display and from whom parents gain some sense of worth and value.

My comments come from experiencing the culture for over 2 years as a pronunciation teacher. The cultures are like day and night, as a foreigner trying to understand the Chinese culture hang it up. Also 2 years does not make me an expert it only gives me a different perspective and insight.
