Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
My 3rd weird forest story:

I was in high school with 2 other friends. We drove to the mall at about midnight because we heard the rumor that the Luby's restaurant in the mall stayed open later than the rest of the mall, and we had the plan to somehow sneak into the mall and run around at night.

Well we got to the mall and Luby's was already closed, so we started driving back home. On the way back there was a stretch of the highway that was slightly elevated with a lot of forest on either side. Driving past this part we all noticed a bright orange glow reflecting off these low hanging clouds to our left. This glow was coming from inside the forest.

We all thought it was a forest fire and we were looking for an adventure that night, so we decided to drive into the nearest neighborhood and see if we could somehow get closer to this fire.

Driving around in the neighborhood, we could not find a road that headed in that direction of the woods. So eventually we ended up parking our car and just walking into the woods. We had no flashlights or anything, but the orange glow off the clouds was illuminating the surrounding area somewhat. We basically just walked blindly in the direction of the source of the glow. At this point it was probably about thirty minutes after midnight.

After walking through the woods for awhile, we came across a makeshift road in the forest. It was composed of planks of wood lying one after the other. This road appeared to lead directly to the source of this glow. So we walked along the side of this road, in the direction of the glow.

Ahead of us the road curved and ended at this glow, it was enormously bright and there was a strange metallic grinding or roaring noise. We started to get nervous so we took cover in the woods and approached the destination through the woods, so that if anyone was there they wouldn't immediately see us. We came up to a clearing, my friends crouched down and I climbed a tree so I had the best vantage point.

What we were looking at was basically a clearing, at least a football field in diameter, with a gigantic crater in the center. It looked like a classic moon crater, raised on the edges. There was a HUGE flame coming out of this crater, this flame must have been over a hundred feet across and the flames were as high or higher than the surrounding trees. Standing around this crater were approximately 15-20 men in yellow hazmat suits. In the center of this flame I could barely make out a rectangular black object maybe about the size of a refrigerator. In the background of the clearing, behind this flame, were several large trailer houses.

Occasionally a load metallic grinding or roaring would be heard from the crater, and the flames would leap even higher into the air. I climbed down the tree so I could tell my friends what I had seen. We contemplated just walking out there and asking these men what was going on, but we were young and scared that maybe these people would kill us because we saw something we weren't supposed to see.

Eventually we left, and we spent the whole night theorizing about what was going on in that strange scene in the middle of the night in the woods. If it was just regular people doing some ordinary legitimate work, why do it at 1 in the morning?

Several days later I was telling a friend this story, and he didn't believe me. It was during the daytime and we decided to go back to the scene. We basically retraced my steps exactly, parked in the same place and walked through the woods. We found the road and followed it to the clearing. When we got there we discovered that everything, including the crater, was completely gone. It was simply an empty clearing now. We looked around for clues and found nothing.

I posted this story on a paranormal forum many years ago, asking if anyone knew what these guys were doing. No one could give me an answer, apparently it's very odd that these guys were doing whatever they were doing in the dead of night.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
years back,i went hiking into north eartern indian himalayan forests.Hundreds of tribes live there and they are pretty scary. But i knew few of the languages and went anyway into very thick bamboo forest.
It was creepiest experience of my life.I didnt see any interesting thing but i felt i was watched by thousands of eyes. The bamboo seems to have got eyes and hands. When bitter cold wind flows through bamboo forests,it creates a weird haunting sound.I thought i was being pursued by some unknown animals or some other tribals.
I roames there for 2 days and had it enough. After returning back i told one of the tribal elders about feeling in bamboo forest and he informed that everybody felt it.Some sort of superstitions and stories are written around it.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I got a special wilderness permit to go into an area in the mountains in CA where they hadn't allowed foot traffic in, in twenty years. There were no trails. It was myself and two other Marines and we did it in exchange for seeing if there was a rare kind of trout in the streams up there. I guess the forest service didn't have anyone who wanted to do it. I'm not sure I was set up with this by a friend. Anyway we hiked for two days with no trails using just a map and compass and on the second day we walked around this huge cliff to find a full on cabin with a lawn and solar power and washer and dryer the whole nine yards all built into the rock face of the cliff. You couldn't see it from above so it had gone unoticed for years. We talked to the guy that lived there and he said we were the first people he had seen hike in, in 14 years. He was a retired helicopter pilot and he had flown all the equipment in by helo. He was squatting on federal land and knew it but didn't seem worried. He said he hikes out every two weeks for supplies by a different route then we came in and he showed it to us. We used that route to get back as he had a trail beaten down so the walking was easier. All in all it was pretty cool. The trout the forest service was looking for were in the creeks so it is still closed to foot travel and we never told the forest service about the old helicopter pilot so I would bet he is still out there.

And once in southern india, our group was chased by a herd of wild elephants. We were on foot and elephants were really angry.I thought they were drunk on liquor(many tribals brew rice toddy in jungles). We couldnt outrun them but somehow we reached a highway and jumped into a slow moving truck.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I have a story...not scary or paranormal, just came across something very "weird", as the title of this thread asks.

While in Ohio in 1996, I drove deep into the mountains of southeast Ohio, parked and hiked into the woods, well away from any trails. I was a very long way from any town, and certainly miles away from any dwelling, and several miles into the woods from where I left my truck. As I tromped through a thick area of the woods (I wanted to make my presence known to any wildlife well in advance), I spotted something bright yellow on the floor of the forest. I walked up to it and discovered a 4-inch diameter pipe sticking straight up out of the ground, about 6 inches above the surface. It was metal, painted bright yellow, uncapped, no smell or odor coming from it, but extending very deep into the ground. The bright yellow paint made it obvious that it was not very old. All the trees and brush immediately around it had obviously been there many years though. The pipe was in the middle of a very dense area of trees and brush that extended for miles.

There was not a single trace anywhere of any construction, roadway, path, structure, dwelling.....nothing but very dense forest and a lot of ground brush, and I was many miles into the hills and mountains of southeast Ohio, a very sparse area. It appeared to be an air vent but as I hiked all around the area at least a half mile radius, I found nothing but dense forest and not a hint of what the "air vent" was connected to.

Any ideas on why a bright colored pipe would be protruding 6 inches above the ground so many miles into the woods and mountains?

Walking through a forest in the Northwest and it was raining and I seen two kids dressed all in white sitting next to a pond.. they both looked very sad. The reason it is important noting that is was raining was because they did not appear to be wet... to make it stranger my dog didn't seem to notice them. They both gave me a long cold stare... I looked forward then back and walked about 10 feet then looked back and no one was there.

A friend and i found snow in the woods, on the east side of a steep ridge, in the springtime, in a part of California where it doesn't snow.

It was real snow. It was awesome. Played in it. Had a snowball fight. Didn't really connect that it wasn't supposed to be there til days later.

We simply gave up trying to share that story.

Another thing i'm sure all can relate to are the numerous, random, how-the-hell-did-that-get-here, wth-abandoned cars.

Go in any direction in the woods long enough and you're sure to find one. like it was choppered in.

Good thread. I camp a lot in the Australian bush, i like a place on a little hill in a remote area, once through the trees there was a line of red lights that looked like christmas lights but I knew they were a long way away, I dimissed it at the time, thought it was other people camping and partying (although I could hear nothing) or maybe a mine. It is only later that I wondered about that line of red lights, perhaps twenty or more, jagged red lights and still do wonder.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I was walking around some farmland in San Marcos Texas out in the middle of noplace and came upon a few tin shed structures. They were not very big, maybe 10' x 8'.

I started looking inside them and there were a bunch of old bottles and various things from like the 1950s/60s era.

I opened up one shed and it was empty but here is where it gets weird.

When I opened the shed and stuck my head inside I thought I heard rain hitting the tin shed. I closed the door, looked up, overcast day but not a drop of rain in sight.

I opened the door again, stuck my head in, and heard the rain again. I was like WTF is going on.

I walked inside of the shed and that's when the light hit them at the right angle for me to see what was making that noise.

The entire inside walls and ceiling of the shed were covered 3 inches deep in daddy long leggers. They all seemed to be interlocked with their legs. There must have been 50,000 of them. They were all tapping their right longest front leg on the tin of the shed in unison. It was one of the weirdest things I ever saw. They also seemed to put off a weird smell in large numbers like that.

I always wondered about this. Has anyone else ever seen such a thing?

Also when I was like 10 I found a couple WW2 machine guns and ammo boxes full of ammo. This was in Raubsville, PA. The machine guns were old and rusty and the type that are bolted down and had the holes in the barrels. They were buried in an old wooden box that we found when my friend's foot broke through the rotting wood as we were walking through the woods. We told my friend's dad and he came and took everything away. We thought we were going to get lots of money for finding something old lol.

When I was a teenager I used to party a lot at a place called American Flats in Virgina City NV. All kinds of weird shit would happen. One night it was only a few of us and no fire. As we sat on some old concrete wall we saw in the distance on a hill what looked like tail lights but bright like brake lights. Odd thing was them going down the hill as if a car was backing up down the hill. We watched it for a few seconds until the red lights separated and began heading towards us until they became bright as bon fires. They made it to the tree line about 300 feet away and went out completely. We investigated the area and found nothing. I could fill a thread with other random shit but that was the strangest event.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
The strangest thing I've ever seen in the woods, I saw not too far from where I'm sitting right now in East Texas on our land... a Hyena.

No kidding.

I know this land... we've got 400 acres here, & I've seen coyotes, bobcats, deer, even a very out-of-place (these days) Red Wolf once... all kinds of things over the years, but obviously, this was a first.

I was a kid, and had hunted & played here since I could walk... we knew & know it very well, as it's been in my Family for 80+ years.

So, nothing surprised us... it's our place, after all.

And then one day, while hunting with my Dad & little brother, there about 75 yds in front of us, in about 1" tall grass and facing us, was a friggin' Hyena.

Classic build... long front legs, shorter back legs, a 'mane', big round ears... head at first lowered & then up on a long thick neck as it noticed us and turned to run in the opposite direction and disappeared.

No-one took a shot at it, and we never saw it again.

Where it came from is still unknown... we later found out that miles away, a man that kept various exotic animals had been ordered by the State to have them relocated to a proper place... a zoo, sanctuary... whatever.

Keeping exotics is not unheard-of in this area... my next-door-neighbor (1/2 mile down the road) currently has 2 black bear, wallabies... and various other non-natives.

But instead relocating them, the aforementioned man in a fit of *screw you guys!* released them all... I do know that for years there were tons of sightings of a chicken-killing black panther.

But to my knowledge, we're the only ones that ever saw a Hyena in the East Texas woods.

When I lived near Cle Elum Washington, in the Cascade mountains, I was hiking and found what I assume were "bigfoot" tracks around and underneath a wild apple tree in the woods. I was with a friend. We hiked back to the little town to report what we'd found and to get people to come verify...and everyone in we encountered said it was no big deal...everyone had seen signs of "bigfoot" regularly. Weird.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I was working near the White Mountain Apache Indian Res about 10 years ago. I'd worked hard all week and thought I would just take a night off and chill out.

I drove for miles down a dirt road and far away from the nearest city. At About 10 at night I pulled to the edge of a rut in the road just to kick back. I climbed out of the cab of my truck, lit a smoke and started walking around. I could hear birds and little animals scurrying about. The desert seemed to come alive that night.

I ended up laying on the hood of my truck sucking down a beer and taking in the beautiful stars. Coming from Southern California, I was amazed at the massive and wonderful Milky Way Galaxy. It was great to behold.

I was nearing the end of my first beer and wanting to roll off the cab and grab another one so I propped myself up on one elbow. Then I heard them. The sound of unshod ponies striking rocks as they walked.

At this point I stood up on the hood to see where the noise was coming from. I still couldn't see anything but knew they were coming from my right. I could feel my heart beat rapidly when the first one broke bush.

He was the most proud person I ever saw. His entire body and horse all had a weird glow about them. He wore a full head dress with feathers that touched the horses rump. The ends of the feathers were lit with a reddish glow.

Being scared to death, I didn't know what to do. I froze. I waited as he rode near the front of my truck. Once there, he stopped and stared directly in my eyes. He had deep lines that crisscrossed his face. I could tell that this man was important and held power. He was extremely strong looking, well built for his age and his face shown the worry of many years trying to keep his people alive.

With a slight kick to his horses flank, he pushed on. Six other warriors followed him. Each dressed differently but all glowing as the first. None of them looked at me. They just rode by.

When I could no longer see them or hear them I jumped off the truck and grabbed a .45 and a flashlight. I was still pretty shook up. I flashed the light across the path they'd taken but could find no tracks. Yet I know I heard the hooves striking stones and the horses breaking against the bush.

I ran to the clearing to see if the edges might have broken or twisted branches. Everything looked normal as far as I could tell. Then I heard the sounds.

It was as if they were coming back but now there were dozens of them. My legs became feeble as I chamber a round in the .45. Soon I could not only hear them 50 yards abreast of me but I began to see their faint glows.

I have to admit, I lost it at this point. I ran back to my truck to get away but realized the doors were locked and keys inside. I must have bumped the auto lock when I grabbed my gun and flashlight! I thought about shooting out the window or breaking it with a rock but that might incite them in some way. I was scared.

With my brain in panic mode I ran off the road, deeper and deeper into the brush. I ran until I could run no more than I walked and ran some more. Finally, not seeing or hearing them anymore, I stopped and looked for shelter.

It was cold that night and I had little in the way of supplies with me. All I could think of doing was staying hidden and keeping warm. I didn't dare use my flashlight for fear of being seen. So I reached down and scooped pine needles all around my body.

I must have fell asleep during the night because when I awoke the sky was black with dark clouds and it began to rain heavily. Once again, I felt my life was in danger and knew I had to do something. I used the flashlight to find better cover but even under big trees, little streams of water would fall. After about 10 minutes I found a very small cave. Not a big one like you see on tv. I ran up there to check it out and found it to be suitable enough to completely shield my body with extra room to spare.

By this time, I was soaked! Everything I wore including my underware was wet. I decided to make a fire at the mouth of the cave for warmth and to dry my clothes. So, I gathered fallen wood from under the trees and pine needles. I tried to light the pine needles but they wouldn't catch. Finally, I pulled off one of my socks, found a dry patch near the top and used it to start a fire with my lighter. The fire felt good but smoke filled my small cave. I ended up grabbing a small log and used it to push the fire away from the entrance. It worked and now the cave was clearing but the fire was going out because of the rain. Naked, I left the cave site to look for long branches. I found a handful of large ones and placed them tepee style around the fire. Now, as the rain hit these green sticks, the water clung to the sticks and was displaced around the fire. I dug a small ditch around my tepee waterbreak and watched as the water pooled around it and spilled over in safe direction.

I was very scared that night and couldn't sleep for many hours. When I awoke, I was freezing. My fire was completely out but my clothing was nearly dry. My plan that day was to retraced my footprints, get back to my truck, break the damn window, get the hell out of there and never come back.

I didn't take long for me to realize the rain had washed away my tracks. I had run for hours the previous night and had no clue as to where I was. I could see no landmarks in any direction. I walked around for a while looking for the biggest nearby hill. Once on top, perhaps I could spot something and find a way out.

As I neared the crest of the hill, my heart sank. I couldn't see anything I recognized from my vantage point. As I sat down, trying to collect my self, I saw strange indian symbols hanging in the tree near me or stuck in the ground. There were no footprints in this area as well but I knew it had been done recently. Sticks were used to make the symbols and they were twisted and broken. The wood inside was completely green. I know I had walked into some sort of religious site and I'd better get the hell out.

I backtracked to the best of my knowledge the way I'd come the night before. I fell twice and hurt my right leg in the process. I had to stop for a break. I sat there thinking how crazy the night had been. and tried to rationalize the experience. Finally I just got up and kept walking in a westernly direction. I came to a small pool of water in some rocks and wanted a drink but the water looked filthy and animal and bird dropping were all around the water. I just lay my head on the rock and almost cried. Alright, I cried a little.

After a time, I got up and pushed onward. I saw a fairly large clearing ahead and made haste. When I reached the clearing I froze in my tracks. A wooden indian spear with the blunt end pushed in the ground stood before me. A single white feather with a painted red tip hung loosly near the top. A large rabbit was impaled on the tip. Its guts on the ground and its blood still slowly dripping like small rivers down the length of the spear.

I'll have to finish my story tomorrow. It's getting way late and I have to work tomorrow.
