California $1,000 fine for eating and driving
California to Crack Down on Distracted Drivers, Even Those Eating
Wavebreak Media/Thinkstock(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) -- With all the emphasis law enforcement agencies have been putting on distracted driving lately, more drivers are suddenly becoming aware that perhaps talking on the phone or texting may not be the smartest thing to do behind the wheel.

But the California Highway Patrol is going one step beyond that this weekend, warning motorists that they can be ticketed if a cop feels that food is causing risky driving.

Eating while driving in the Golden State between 6 a.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday could mean as much as a $1,000 fine if it impairs a driver's ability to operate a motor vehicle. But the likelihood of such a steep penalty isn't great since texters usually face a $20 ticket on a first offense.

Cops will also be on the lookout for other forms of distracted driving, such as reading newspapers or applying makeup.

I get this, I saw some fat broad eating a bowl of soup whilst driving a jacked dually F-350. A fucking ceramic bowl of soup. She was taking slurps while holding the bowl in her left and putting down the spoon to steer.

THAT deserves a ticket, nevermind pudgy fucks scarfing triple whoppers while driving at 75mph. I'm not against this in the least, too bad the CHP will go overboard and bust those just trying to have a granola bar on the way to work.

Technology for cars needs to catch up so that they can drive themselves.

It will end speeding, traffic jams, and accidents.

If we did the right thing and required all movement to be coordinated through law enforcement, then technology via self-driving cars could also end crime and stalking.

There is no law against eating while driving, but under California's vehicle code, a distracted driver can be ticketed for having "wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property."

So LEO's again are able to judge as well as enforce the law?

Use your fucking head, a dripping greasy burger is more of a problem than a fucking granola bar to eat while driving. I admit, I have done both and a burger is WAY more of a fucking distraction than a chocolate bar or granola bar.

millions of people eat, talk on a cell phone, text, put on makeup, get blow jobs, have sex, etc....all while driving, every single day in america, without hurting anyone.

I don't agree with victimless crime laws. if someone gets in wreck because of a stupid act, then just penalize them for fault in the wreck. simple.

this kind of mindless, blanket law making is what has screwed up our country.

Such a progressive and "tolerant" state. Can't wait to move out. No open bag of chips(open container)? The state is broke looking for ways to generate revenue. Remember boys and girls, "it's for your safety..."

I am not sure why Canadians are putting their 2cents into this conversation, they must like big government because they choose to live in a socialized country. America is great because of the freedoms we have, and yes being a "fat ass" is a freedom, just as being a "skeleton" is a freedom. I am not sure why you are so worried about the body size of others as it does not pertain to you. What does pertain to "American Citizens" is the tax dollars that we are spending to fund all these laws and regulations. BIG government, is far worse than a BIG ASS! But if you want to come to the States and pay tax dollars to waste on policing people for eating in their car or all the other bull shit laws that get passed (especially in California) then please. We need all the tax payers we can get because we need to support all the people on welfare. Not to mention giving money away so CEO's can take millions for a bonus 'cuz God knows they need a really nice vacation. Maybe they will spend our tax money they get for their bonus and spend it in Canada!

Good, hopefully the state follows through. People need to pull the burger out of their mouth and pay attention to the road. As well as get off their mobile devices. Increase the fine for all offense, I have no problem with the in my state. If you must eat or talk on the phone, then take the bus, because you are nothing but a hazard on the road.

Let it roll off your shoulder. American bashing is a national pass time for many Canadians, esp when its a slow day for Hockey

However...when it comes to being overweight, they should look in the mirror first before making a dumb comment like that. I lived in Atlantic Canada and saw many many more obese humans there than I do in NYC or Dallas. I don't judge people by their weight, but it was hard to miss...

Pot meet kettle as they say:

...For Canadians, being overweight – meaning 25 per cent or more of their body weight is fat – is now the norm by age 36.

All told, 61 per cent of [Canadian] adults are considered to be overweight or obese, according to a pair of studies published in Health Reports.

I don't know about other states, but here in california the police do not serve or protect. Their main job is revenue generators now. Any new way to squeeze a few extra dollars out of the average person, they will take it.
