my friend died today

I had a friend in a nearby town whom I rarely see anymore but we've been friends for nearly 30 years. He never missed my birthday. Never. Anyway, he calls about three weeks ago now, leaves a message. His voice breaks. He said he's sorry his voice sounds funny, he's had a cold for awhile. Wants to know how I'M doing and sorry he missed me. I don't call him back right away cuz I am busy - taking care of people. Anyway, I send him two e-mails, saying what's the matter, don't you know how to use a keyboard??? I figure I will call him back closer to Christmas Eve.

I get an e-mail from an old acquaintance in the town he lives in that he was found dead. Pulmonary embolism. Buried on Christmas Eve. I could not attend the service and didn't want to remember him like that anyway. So...I feel for you.

As for internet friends, I had a friend who was battling cancer. I did a card shower kinda thing for her, asked people to mail me whatever they wanted to give her, and then I sent her a surprise box in the mail. She was overwhelmed. I was worried and prayed for her regularly. She's doing well, but got mad at me about something, told me off and I never heard from her again! Had some other "internet" friends that stopped e-mailing altogether, and a lost a good friend of 18 years to Facebook a couple of years ago. I know what it is like to get digital silence and I am often shocked at how hurtful it can be, and how past generations would never know what it felt like! LOL

OP, you should start a tribute page to your friend or become active in one. Let people know he/she was YOUR friend too, and that you feel the loss. When I lost my friend, I thought - what would he have liked to hear from me? And I typed it on Legacy.com. Find some way to express yourself. Don't tune out. They (your friends/acquaintances) are all still out there - and just maybe, there is one person waiting to hear from YOU. Prayers for you ~ Keats

Sorry for your loss, OP. My cousin, who was also my Maid of Honor at my wedding, was killed by a drunk driver. I heard the sad news listening to the radio. It was a news story. I was upset no one called me.
