Three New Hampshire communities are making plans to give out a single blast of flu shots — 5,000 in one day — as part of a drill to prepare for a widespread epidemic.

The effort is being undertaken to test the state’s ability to render emergency mass inoculations as the threat of avian flu unfolds.

The shots will be given in Manchester, Portsmouth and Colebrook on Nov. 19, said state health officials. The drill will involve vaccinations against the normal influenza; no vaccine is available yet for the bird flu.

The drill will test the ability of health officials to issue mass vaccinations, the capacity of the state health laboratory, surge capacity of hospitals, internal operations at the state level, and judicial issues involving quarantine and isolation, officials said.

Residents of the Manchester, Portsmouth and Colebrook areas are being asked to voluntarily participate, Health and Human Services Commissioner John Stephen said.

“The issue is for us to make this incident as much a reality as possible so we can prepare for the potential of a pandemic in New Hampshire,” Stephen said.

New Hampshire will be the first state in the country to undertake such a drill, he said. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is paying for the flu shots, and an outside firm will monitor the drill and report on it.

Portsmouth will distribute 2,000 shots; Manchester, 2,000; Colebrook, 1,000.

Yesterday, Portsmouth announced the time of the clinic: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Portsmouth High School. Stephen said Manchester and Colebrook will announce the location and times of their clinics when the details are completed.

In Portsmouth, free shots will be provided to residents of Portsmouth, Rye, Greenland, New Castle and Newington, all members of the Portsmouth Area Emergency Planning Team.

The flu shots are free to individuals 18 or older who have a photo identification.

Logistics, crowd control and traffic problems will be tested, Portsmouth officials said at a news conference yesterday.

Fifty hospital staffers will be on hand for the practice session, in addition to numerous volunteers.

“Most hospitals around the country are at close to capacity right now,” said Dr. Don Albertson at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. “The reality is, with a larger number of people that would come with a disaster, we have to learn to think out of the box.”

Stephen said Peterborough initially agreed to participate in the drill but opted out. He did not know why.

The reporter mislead in this article. All that is really happening is that they are giving out the regular flu vaccine that is preparing for the other types of flu that are anticipated to hit the US this Fall/Winter. The only reason it is a story and even remotely connected to the bird flu is that they are looking for different ways to administer the Bird flu vaccine once and if it does mutate and a vaccine can be made. This is just prepatory testing for a bad case scenario. They do not currently have a bird flu vaccine nor do they claim to have a bird flu vaccine. Just testing the process of how to administer to Millions of people in a short amount of time when and if the need arises.

I would rather have them practice first to get it right instead of people blaming GWB because they had to stand in line for 2 days to get a vaccine and their 90 y/o mother dies or something.

For at least the last 5 years, we have heard of virus conditions in birds in Asia. Remember the massive burning of chickens in Hong Kong a few years ago, and again and again in recent past? Last I read, there were at least 10 different bird viruses on the brink of making the jump between species (usually from birds to pigs, then to humans as pig protein is the closest to human protein).

So why the big hubbub about H5N1? Seems suspiciously convenient timing, IMO.

If people were to be put in concentration camps with purposes other than containing the bird flu. Do you think other countries would come to our aid or are they:
