HELP! I am buying a domain name for the first time, and starting a web site...
Can anyone recommend my best options for doing this?

I already have the domain name picked out, and while the .com one is gone, the .net and .org are available.

Then I need a good web hosting solution.

Any information gratefully received!

Cheap is nice but itīs great if your site is up almost all of the time. I had a pretty busy cartoon doll site hosted by [link to www.dominet.net] Never had any problems.

Some other sites i worked on are hosted there and so far so good.

Man yahoo all the way

2.99/yr for domain name

8.99/mo for 5gb storage, 100 email accounts, etc.

Or if you have high speed internet normally they give you free webspace (not much, like 10mb per website, i have cox and they give you 7 of these) then all youd have to buy is the domain name which yahoo is probably gonna be the cheapest and easiest.

do you have web page design software? such as frontpage?

if not you need to either buy it or get hosting that comes with web building software built in

If you have Netscape Composer, you can design all yourself without any difficulty or html knowledge.

Moonfruit is Ģ5.99 a month - for that you can have up to 5 websites. Alternatively, itīs Ģ1.99 a month for 1 site.
I use it: [link to uno.moonfruit.com]

Anders donīt use Frontpage, which I think you have ?

I can hack the hell out of your site via google if you use FP.

How many pages do you want on the site ? If only a few, go for cheap stuff, even free hosting.

Your ISP should host about 3-5 MB ? After that, go for a host thatīs honest. NO site stays on the web 24/7, itīs impossible.

And use goooooogle ads too.

mainly to host my book publicity, maybe 10 pages max

i quite laike the yahoo starter package, 9 bux a month but seems to come with a lot

Anders, good idea to use Yahoo. I did for my biz, except I never went ahead with the www site. Yahoo email is excellent, and thatīs why I paid them money. 1 gig mail storage nīstuff.

But I did buy the domains (two- .com & .au) from MelbourneIT.

If you use yahoo site builder stuff, youīll be ok; but if you need progīs, pm me. Donīt spend a cent on software just yet.

But Yahooīs a good choice.

Itīs 5:30 am here in Adelaide; Iīm going to hit the sack ... the one with pillows. Not my nut sack BTW.

Re: HELP! I am buying a domain name for the first time, and starting a web site...
anders, the only bad thing about getting a host that supplies the web page building software is that they typially use templates and you are very limited in what you can do with the appearance of your pages

you could start out that way just to get it online, but you will want more control very soon

check out coffeecup, pretty cheap software

i havenīt used it in a long time though so i canīt say whether itīs good or not

i use frontpage and have never been hacked, but maybe i just donīt have anyone that is malicious enough to do that shit visiting my sites

Re: HELP! I am buying a domain name for the first time, and starting a web site...
Anders if the .com has gone try another name. Just because the org and net are there suggests that the .com is not a mega bucks organisation and you should not steal their name. If they are nice and not using it take it over with agreement. First rule should be karmic.

Second I pay for a host and can use 50 sites etc and they did the name for me. About 10 pounds a month and stats etc. (Simply.com) I just dont justify it. Getting a good Google listing (ie not page 1004) is more important.

I dont worry about hackers - there is only a script there and it is remote from me. (I think....) Good luck. Ah yes I was told my site is not user friendly and to get a designer (like the firm telling me this). My brother is in fact a brilliant lecturer in this UK and US. I prefer it to be my site and could not afford $2000 anyway.

Iīve had godaddy, 1and1, yahoo, and a couple of others. Didnīt much like any of them (esp. 1and1) Yahoo sites are all cookie cutters, 1and1 is totally confusing.

juniperavenue is the best Iīve found so far.

just send email, itīs cheaper and besides nobody will visit your site.

deleting email is easier also, they see your address, they click delete.

Anders...

Yahoo registers domains for as low as $2.99 per year.

I have about 100 of my clients sites on www.space2burn.com - proven to be very reliable and amazingly fast response for tech support.

GoDaddy is a saturation of shared servers. Servers are often slow and tech responses are a waiting game.
