Nobody wants to see a shark when they're at the beach let alone 50 of them! Officials in Australia shut the beach down after the massive number of sharks were spotted in a feeding frenzy close to the shore. The sharks were feeding on a school of tuna. Some of them were estimated to be more than eight feet long.

SA firefighters battle oil depot blaze

A firefighter was hurt and cars and buildings were destroyed as a waste oil depot in Adelaide exploded in flames.

The blaze started about 11am (CDST) on Tuesday and quickly engulfed the business at Wingfield in the city's north.

More than 100 firefighters battled the flames on the ground while the water-bombing helicopter was also used.

"We are asking motorists to avoid non-essential travel to Wingfield. Those travelling in the area should exercise caution as smoke may reduce visibility."

Study shows rats are as good at decision-making as humans

RATS are smart, that's a well known fact. But US researchers said yesterday a series of tests have shown they may be just as good as humans at juggling information in order to make the best decision.

"Statistically optimal combination of multiple sensory stimuli has been well documented in humans, but many have been skeptical about this behavior occurring in other species," said neuroscientist Anne Churchland

"Our work is the first demonstration of its occurrence in rodents."

Next, Dr Churchland and colleagues plan to build on their research by studying the interaction of sensory experiences and memory.

"Now that we have a good animal model in which to investigate these questions, the world - or the brain - is our oyster," she said.

Rare whale shark spotted

A sardine fisherman has spotted a rare whale shark off Western Australia's southern coast, in what is believed to be the first such sighting.

Whale sharks are the world's biggest fish, growing to more than 12 metres, and are normally found only in tropical waters.

However, the harmless endangered species - which feeds predominantly on plankton - has come under increasing threat from Asian shark-finners, with the Southern Ocean sighting a possible sign of behavioural change, according to scientists.

Albany commercial fisherman Peter Westerberg described how he was in King George Sound, about 420 kilometres southeast of Perth, in the early hours of Saturday when the blue-and-white-spotted giant bumped up against his sardine net.

He said Mr Westerberg had 'clearly recognised' the rare species.

'He loved the fact it was covered in spots,' he said.

'Given that whale sharks are normally a warm-water species, it's amazing that this animal was recorded down there.'

And if so have they also disabled the power of chemtrails?

Detectives investigating shootings in the city traced several illegal handguns to the same batch manufactured by Glock in Austria last year.

Working alongside customs officials, they discovered the pistols were being sold to a German gun dealer then imported into Australia by criminals.

Sydney police raided a dozen properties yesterday morning, including one at Sylvania Waters Post Office.

Officers say they found a parcel containing 140 Glock magazines, seven guns, ammunition and steroids.

Australian and Chinese scientists believe they have identified a new group of Stone Age people, dubbed the Red Deer Cave people.

The scientists have studied fossils found in China and concluded they might represent a previously unknown people who lived as recently as 11,000 years ago.

Severe storm warning for south-east

New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania are in the firing line after severe thunderstorms ploughed through South Australia yesterday.

About 30,000 lightning strikes hit South Australia, including 1000 in the Adelaide area, as storms formed in a line from the southern coastline to the Northern Territory border.

Flash flooding and damaging winds were major features, causing damage and power outage.

As much as 46mm fell at Ackland Hill and 37mm at Eagle On The Hill. The city picked up 24mm, its wettest day in 12 months.

Wind gusts reached 100km/h in some parts including Snowtown in the mid north.
