This is what I got....
Dear
Arlenem:
Thank you for taking the time to contact me regarding your concerns about online intellectual property. This dialogue is important to me as your representative in Washington and I appreciate your input.
The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), H.R. 3261, was introduced by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) on October 26, 2011 and its companion legislation in the Senate, the Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act (PIPA), S. 968, was introduced by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) on May 12, 2011.
Protection of copyright holders and private property rights is well intended and is a high priority of mine. Infringement on these rights devalues the assets of those who work hard to develop them and as a result, harms the economy as well. That said, it is important to maintain a free and open internet and focus anti-piracy law on those who break the law.
Because of concerns raised by both the industry and consumers over possible excessive government regulation of internet speech, it is my hope that revisions will be made to avoid broad federal authority which could restrict portions of the internet to U.S. users. The House Judiciary Committee will resume an examination of this legislation in February and I will closely monitor amendments offered.
I look forward to working with my colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives to ensure that the needs of copyright protection are balanced with the First Amendment Rights of Americans. Should a revised version of this legislation come to the House floor for a vote, I will be sure to keep your views in mind.
As always, I welcome the opportunity to communicate with you regarding issues impacting Colorado. For your convenience, you may sign up to receive regular email updates from me on matters important to the 3rd Congressional District at [
