INSIDER WILMA REPORT: Florida is not okay--PERIOD!!! | |
B User ID: 260 United States 11/02/2005 12:25 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I live in Fl and there is no coverage on Wilma. The other day I read that Jeb Bush was saying that this isn´t Fema´s fault it is mine, but all of you were told to stock up on water and food for at least 3 days. Florida Power has most of their customers with electricity, but the other companies are saying that it will be Thanksgiving before the customers have electricity. |

We have many trees down that stood strong thru both of last years hurricanes. The back side of Wilma was really scary and much stronger than any other hurricane I have been through. I would have to agree that Wilma was a Cat 3 going across FL. We had to put on a new roof after last years storms. We lost shingle in Wilma gauranteed to 130 mph. Our neighborhood has more structual damage than last year. We did get power back yesterday which is wonderful. Getting gas to run the generators was a real problem for us. We still can not find any meats or dairy products at the stores that have had power for 5 days. |

When the eye passes, the winds switch to West and southwest. Nothing strange there at all. Screamin´ Eagle User ID: 35012 United States 11/02/2005 06:01 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Btoward County - more than 265,000 customers are still without power. Public schools are closed until further notice. Dade County - more than 200,000 customers are still without power. School resumes on Thursday. Monarch HS in Coconut Creek is sheltering over 1000 homeless individuals. As you know many of the taller buildings here have glass facades and quite a few of them lost a lot of that glass. The Broward school building "crystal palace" was absolutely devestated as well as the courthouse. Yesterday, a thunderstorm with heavy rains blew through collapsing many weakened roofs, especially flat deck roofs. People are being forced from their homes and many have nowhere to go. Sewage is backing up onto the streets due to a lack of power to the lift stations. |

cdwarior User ID: 528 United States 11/02/2005 07:16 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There was an ice storm a few years back in New England. Some people were without power for 12 weeks. Through the worst of the winter. They had to bring in the military with tracked vehicles because nothing else could travel on 2 inches of ice. The difference? The dependent class vs the independent class. After a full month of hurricane disaster news the Florida jackasses still expect someone to feed and wipe them. Choke on your SS and welfare as it sickens me that this is what 30 years of my stolen paychecks buy. Oh, I could pick a mile of highway or maybe some cruise missle parts but today for the sake of argument I pick you. I got swindled. |

Dee User ID: 536 United States 11/02/2005 08:56 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I don´t know which is worse people who refuse to prepare (not the ones who can´t) or the coldhearted among us who never miss an opportunity to bitch. This isn´t a foreign country.. It´s America where real and seemingly under reported disaster is happening. It´s where many of us just happen to have family. And.. Reason for concern. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 4458 United States 11/02/2005 09:03 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What happened in Pakistan or India has nothing to do with what happened and is happening in Florida. Relativity does not diminish the life-altering impact. I have some friends in Boca Raton - they are being told don´t expect power until Nov. 22. The news coverage is limited because the government does not want anyone to know how bad the damage is or the horrendous impact on the citizens. If Jeb Bush ever gets elected again, you can bet it was a rigged election after this fiasco and the lies he tells. The only thing I agree with Jeb Bush on is that people should have had some supplies on hand. However, in light of the severity of the storm, this would do little. How many of you are prepared to live without power for a month? How many of you are prepared to live without work/pay for a month? How many of you are prepared financially to relocate for a month or more to a hotel outside the affected areas? What about your kids? Are they in school? What about your home and possessions? Feel comfortable leaving them to the looters? Get real. No matter how much a person prepares, some events cannot be addressed on an individual basis. That is the whole concept of community, states and federal government - to serve the people. |

If YOU are not prepared to take care of yourself until the agencies get their messes cleaned up, move to a safer area. You decided to live there, don´t cry when nature slaps your ass leaves you without your MTV for a few weeks. |

Screamin´ Eagle User ID: 35012 United States 11/02/2005 10:02 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hate to burst your bubble, but we were prepared. We were given ample warning and took advantage of it. Fortunately we did not have to wait hours to get gas, because we filled our tanks BEFORE the storm. We didn´t have to stand in line for hours waiting for water because we had 50 gallons stored as well as three filled bathtubs. We didn´t have to worry about standing in line for food because we keep a three week supply for just such an emergency. We keep a supply of 250 pounds of charcoal for cooking. We were the only family in our neighborhood to shutter our homes (yes, we were laughed at) and not receive any damage. We also have a 7500 watt generator to keep our perishables fresh. Though I´m definitely going to purchase a new one, at least 25,0000 watts. So please don´t try to insinuate I was unprepared. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 300 United States 11/02/2005 10:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | That´s great Eagle. You look after yourself and your family and that´s commendable. So why are you pissing and moaning about FEMA? You don´t need them and anyone with common sense that stays prepared doesn´t need them. If someone can´t afford to stay prepared they don´t need to be living in that area. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 26816 United States 11/02/2005 10:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | "and its not up to FEMA anyway." We had all better get used to the idea that no ordinary individuals, city, county, state, or even the feds are prepared for disasters in the proportions seen in the past few hurricanes. The most we can do is prepare as best we can with three weeks worth of essentials, having set them aside. If you read the dates on canned foods, many are dated for 2008, so there would be no need of rotating a stache often. Taking into account what each member of the family uses in a day´s time, laying aside supplies should be a no-brainer. Candles, lanterns would furnish light. Clean water. Battery-operated radios would afford news. Heat? I don´t know. Not everyone can afford a generator, but if gas is not accessable, then they are good only for short-term use. Wood-burning stoves are not in the cards for all, either. Having the warmest clothing you can afford is for everyone! Last minute packing for leaving should bring to mind certain items that would have to be replaced in the event of total destruction of one´s home: Cook ware, dinnerware, spices, salt, sugar, bathroom supplies, etc. Clothing. Cash. I wonder how quickly the insurance companies paid off. In the meantime... Preparing for disaster is a crap shoot as we have seen and heard during the aftermaths of the latest hurricanes. We can only do what we can, forgetting the governments, as they are incompetent and inefficient, as was shown during Katrina, Rita, and now Wilma in FL. Just my 2c worth. |
