Re: 3.7 San Francisco Bay area
As a resident of and having family in both the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas, I watch local (California/West Coast) quake activity pretty closely.

For the record, it is unusual to have a quake over 3 in this area - we only get a 3+ in this region (Contra Costa/Solano/Sacramento Counties) very, very occasionally:

I watch the quakes closely too, and I know that is a fairly large quake for the area. Shallow, too!

3.7 in USA moment Magnitude is a 4.3 +/- 0.1 (Richter Scale) anywhere else in the world. This is why it felt strong !

That's interesting! I wondered why this quake has been described as hitting with a jolt.

As previously mentioned, USGS downgraded this quake to 3.5.

And then they did it again!

There was a second quake this morning in the same area (just across the Interstate from the previous one), initially reported as 3.7 and again downgraded to 3.5.

One was practically on top of the other (literally just on the other side of the freeway), so the second one obscures the first one on the (USGS) maps.

The longitude/latitude locations are posted above hf

Re: 3.7 San Francisco Bay area
Oftentimes when we do have a m3-4 in the Bay Area, they go unnoticed (likely due to depth), but both of these "little" 3.7's (3.5 per USGS) were felt over a widespread area.

Not everyone (knows to or chooses to) report their reaction of a particular quake to USGS, but I copy/paste the reactions for later reference.

The recent 4.3 near The Geysers only garnered a few hundred replies, even though it was only at a depth of 1.4km:
[link to earthquake.usgs.gov]

This pair of 3.7's received more reaction. This might be due to population, or because both of these smaller quakes were felt as a jolt:

Re: 3.7 San Francisco Bay area
For people who say "earthquakes happen everyday in California," yes they do, but those are minor (less than 2.9). The frequency of anything over 3.0 is staggered, and February 2012 has been a "big" month.

If anyone can find a running list of 3.0 and over in California, I'd sure appreciate the link (not just the 7 day list USGS provides, I'm looking for a historical list).

In the meantime, here is the activity over 3.0 in BOTH California and Nevada, just this (busy) month (compiled from screencaps of this USGS page*). I'll try to come back later and update geography (i.e. Northern, Central or Southern California). The purpose being to illustrate some increased activity of quakes over 3.0.

2/01 06:40:31 3.5 Wells, NV
2/01 11:05:05 3.4 Brawley, CA

There will be three, actually. Then a big one in Seattle. Then another Cal quake after that.

Devastating it will be...
