SPAIN soladarity w Greece> Hundreds of thousands protest austerity, labor laws. Huge demonstration in 57 cities. Riot police gather in Greece
AP: "Hundreds of thousands of protesters were marching throughout Spain on Sunday in the first large-scale show of anger over new labor reforms that make it easier for companies to fire workers and pull out of collective bargaining agreements.

The country's main trade unions organized marches in 57 cities, beginning midmorning in Cordoba in the south and expected to end with evening marches in Toledo and Valencia, with a very large demonstration planned in Madrid from midday..."

Union organizers said around a million people had marched by mid-afternoon, but official figures were not released.

This seems like a big deal

Meanwhile in Greece, "Riot police guard Greek assembly as protesters gather"

(google for link)

Now the Greek PM has suddenly decided to head early to Belgium

Looks like anything but a peaceful weekend

Any word from the Spanish or Greek GLP posters?

What's going on in Spain?

Thanks in advance

Seems like a huge number...and that's the official report

The labor unions say it's over a million

And riot police are gathering in Greece before the big day tomorrow

Looks like the PIIGs aren't going quietly to slaughter

Only media coverage about spain and greece protests i see is on RT and PressTV.

Quite ironic but says a lot about our "free" media.

How can almost a million people in 57 cities take to the streets, and nearly no one notice or cover it??

This article came out when there were only 20,000 people protesting:

[link to www.presstv.ir]

This is much larger...no coverage?

Basically, they're saying: go ahead, protest, get upset, no one will hear you

I guess it's that old philosophical question rewritten:

If a protest happened in the street, and no media covered it, did it really happen?

I'm surprised there's no live stream or webcams I can find.

This is why I was hoping a GLPer living in Spain might be able to shed some light

thanks guys

Around the world, youth unemployment soaring

How can this end well....

its first page stuff.. over 1 million people across country.

i wonder when "the shits hits fan" as you say here on GLP comes to my country too, we are in the same boat.

Population of Spain is what, 40 some odd million?

1 million protestors in Spain would be like 10 million in the US

Would be like getting the entire city of NY to show up someplace

If one million Canadians took to the street to protest, would be a pretty big deal''

And yet press is mum

weird

1.936 no 1.930

During this past 7 years, socialism had f_ck us all and the "unions"? (what is that?) had been on silence, bribed by the goverment.

If we "move" again, it could be worst than '36. But not by the youth, they are sedate.

Don't believe anythink wrote on the newspaper, they all are under the gov's rule (money).

My son and several of his friends were protesting in Malaga earlier today. At the moment I've no idea of the numbers that were/are there.

Rajoy is expecting unions to organise general strikes.

Things, where I live, have got noticably worse during the past 6 months.

Meant the decade of 1930s, not year 1930, but you're right

if Spanish move again, could be a big deal, worth paying attention to

I don't think the Spanish take chit lying down

In hindsight, Spanish divl war was a preview of what was to come with the big fight between the fascists and the democrats in World War II

same forces building up again...

Please keep us informed, thanx!
