ABC News 15, local Phoenix news, reported 3 hrs ago:
TONOPAH, AZ - The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office investigated a suspicious package found at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station Wednesday night.
Jim McDonald, a spokesman for plant operator Arizona Public Service, said members of the bomb squad were called to investigate a Walmart bag that was found about 100 feet away from the reactors. It is unclear at this time what was in the bag. Officials say that even if the bag contained something hazardous, it was not close enough to the facility to damage it.
I wonder what was in the bag? Why are officials so confident, the contents couldn't have damaged the facility?
The reactor containment buildings are some of the largest in the world at about 2.6 million cubic feet (74,000 m3) enclosed. The three containment domes over the reactors are made of 4-foot (1.2 m) thick concrete.[11]
There have been other similar incidents, however, the facility is heavily guarded, with security checkpoints, conducted by guards armed with semi-automatic weapons. The last incident to shut down the plant; an employee who had a flare on the floorboard of their car, that resembled a stick of dynamite. Poor dude, bad day at the office...
The 4000 ft facility, has been highly guarded since the start of the conflict in Iraq, back in 2003, and is a top priority, of Homeland Security.
I recently learned this information, after seeing the news report.
The plant is an engineering marvel, in of itself, and has many safeguards in its design, and operations.
Shew! That's good to know...
