The permanent population is just over 100,000 (2011),[5] and the island nation is composed of 32 atolls and one raised coral island, dispersed over 3.5 million square kilometres, (1,351,000 square miles) straddling the equator, and bordering the International Date Line at its easternmost point. Kiribati maintains cordial relations with most countries and has close relations with its Pacific neighbours, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, which provide the majority of the country's foreign aid. Taiwan and Japan also have specified-period licences to fish in Kiribati's waters. As one of the world's most vulnerable nations in terms of the effects of climate change, Kiribati has been an active participant in international diplomatic efforts relating to climate change, most importantly the UNFCCC conferences of the parties (COP). Kiribati is a member of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), an intergovernmental organization of low-lying coastal and small Island countries. Established in 1990, the main purpose of the alliance is to consolidate the voices of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to address global warming. AOSIS has been very active from its inception, putting forward the first draft text in the Kyoto Protocol negotiations as early as 1994. In 2012 the government began negotiating with Fiji to buy land in to which it could move some of its population due to rising sea levels [link to en.wikipedia.org] Thread: Most Dangerous Time for Strong Earthquakes in 2012, Super Full Moon, Alignment of Earth-Sun-Jupiter, Venus Transit, Solar Eclipse over USA & JP Thread: Strange Sounds,Strange Rumblings, Sonic Booms, The Hum, Groaning, Earthquake Connection, Electromagnetic Voices, Post Your Recordings Here EARTHQUAKE FORECAST [link to igipop.webs.com] |

This does happen and is nothing to do with global warming : all the Guardian readers in the world cannot prevent it. How about relocating all Kiribati inhabitants to the UK and sending all Guardian readers to the Pacific? I have a feeling the move is less to do with climate change and more to do with the unsustainable population and man made changes. I do feel bad for the people of Kiribati. It can't be easy to have to leave your homeland. Last Edited by abrock on 03/08/2012 06:30 PM |

One of the most important aspects of conspiracy theories is being able to discern when there isn't one. Oh yeah, like you'd understand anyway. Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?. . .J. Handy |

I live next to the Atlantic Ocean in Florida. There are old pylons in the Indian River (lagoon with tidal access to Atlantic Ocean) that were driven into the ground in the early 1960's. There are concrete structures in the water that were there in the 1950's. The water line is at the same place now as it was when I first saw it in 1978. Maybe, just maybe, the land in the South Pacific islands is sinking. |

We just have to take a lesson from the Vikings when they lived in Greenland. The climate changed for the colder. They froze and many died before they left. We just have to learn to roll with the punches that changing climates throw at us. |

Quoting: Rain-Man In what could be the world's first climate-induced migration of modern times, Anote Tong, the Kiribati president, said he was in talks with Fiji's military government to buy up to 5,000 acres of freehold land on which his countrymen could be housed. Some of Kiribati's 32 pancake-flat coral atolls, which straddle the equator over 1,350,000 square miles of ocean, are already disappearing beneath the waves. Most of its 113,000 people are crammed on to Tarawa, the administrative centre, a chain of islets which curve in a horseshoe shape around a lagoon. "This is the last resort, there's no way out of this one," Mr Tong said. "Our people will have to move as the tides have reached our homes and villages." [link to www.telegraph.co.uk] Some of Kiribati's 32 coral atolls, which straddle the equator, are already disappearing beneath the ocean. None of the atolls rises more than a few metres above the sea level Fiji, which is more than 2,000km (1,300 miles) away, is one of a number of countries that Kiribati hopes its population may be able to move to in the future. [link to www.bbc.co.uk] Probably false, I've caught "them" lying over erosion and not level change..probably nothing and if anything lies..as usual. They are getting out of hand with this cause no one listens to them no except the uneducated, |

What is happening are the forces that shaped the land masses all over the world as we see it today. In time again the islands will rise as they did before and flourish again. This has nothing to do with climate change. It just happens to be happening in our lifetime to witness it. The world is ever-changing and has been for millions of years, and it will continue no matter what man does. Just how I see it. It is still a great day! |

Even if that happens, the global warming deniers will keep denying it. Because they are paid shills of the Oil Industry, and denying the facts is their job. Unfortunately many have bought into the lies. What must be understood is the deniers argument is political and not scientific. Sure there are some scientific arguments against man made global warming but the vast majority of evidence supports it's theory. They have been told that it is a socialist plot to redistribute wealth in the name of environmental preservation. That it is somehow un-American, even communist and they eat it up. Of course the only wealth that would be redistributed is that of the oil companies. Lol. It is much easier to dismiss it as some liberal plot to undermine our freedoms than to actualy admitt that we do effect our planet and delicate ecosystem that supports life as we know it and then take responsibility for our actions. That's heavy stuff. It threatens our comfy lifestyles that we loooove sooo much. Of course it is met with such hostility , it is a threat to our core identity as Americans. So the oil industry buys a couple of scientists and sympathetic news agencies to promote they're agenda and the kiddies eat it up like candy as the petrol giants laugh all the way to the bank. |
