[link to earthobservatory.nasa.gov] Bering Sea Teeming with Ice For most of the winter of 2011–2012, the Bering Sea has been choking with sea ice. Though ice obviously forms there every year, the cover has been unusually extensive this season. In fact, the past several months have included the second highest ice extent in the satellite record for the Bering Sea region, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). [link to earthobservatory.nasa.gov] Oldest Arctic Sea Ice is Disappearing A new study by NASA scientist Joey Comiso has found that the oldest and thickest Arctic sea ice is disappearing at a faster rate than the younger and thinner ice at the edges of the ice cap [link to earthobservatory.nasa.gov] Dust Storm in Southwest Asia Dust storms have been raging across southwestern Asia and the Middle East in mid-March 2012. Intense dust events spanned thousands of kilometers several meteorologists characterized the dust activity as a “super sandstorm.” [link to earthobservatory.nasa.gov] It is pretty strange. I live in Tucson, and it snowed here twice in the last month. The last time I've seen snow here, aside from up in the mountains, was on Easter Sunday in 1998. |

Quoting: GeekOfTheWeek IS the moon wrong? Where is the data to substantiate it? Not saying it isn't wrong, because I see lots of changes in the night sky compared to years ago....but why hasn't any accredited astronomers said anything about it? Why can't they just come out and tell us the truth?? We are capable of understanding that the universe evolves as well.....I hate how they treat the population like we're all mindless children. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Resident Led Zeppelin Expert (ask me anything!) Every year there is a contest to predict the day that the ice will go off of Milacs Lake. Milacs is a large lake in North Central Minnesota. Ice out is a pretty cool phenomenon, actually. The ice will slowly start to thaw during a warm spell, and then there will be one day where the lake will go from being completely iced over to being totally free of ice literally within a matter of a few hours. You can watch it happen right before your eyes. POOF. Gone. Anyway... the earliest ice out on Milacs since they began to record it(90 years or so) was April 2nd 2000. The average is around April 20th. This year the ice went out on March 24! 9 days earlier than the record! This would be the equivalent of someone shattering the all time home run record by, like 25! Never would have thought it possible. |

User ID: 1079209 United States 03/26/2012 05:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Look at all the solar activity this year. All that energy has to go somewhere. This is the result. As long as the sun continues to hammer the earth, we will continue to see warm, unsettled weather. This will probably be the norm for at least another couple of years. Meanwhile, enjoy the warm spring, because summer could get a little bumpy. In Wyoming we have seen 70s already, but we have also seen some high winds. Neither is unheard of here, but it is a little unusual to see 70s this early. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. "America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards." -- Claire Wolfe |
