any vets or cat experts here? what to do about sick stray cat thats in my garage lol.
Woke up this morning and there was a sick stray in my garage sleeping on a pillow. It has cold like symptoms (sneezing, cat cough?, runny eyes and nose) and it is really skinny. I fed it and it ate like it was starving. All it is doing is sleeping, but will get up to be petted. I think it was abandoned or a house cat. Should i try to nurse it back to health and give it a chance or take it an animal shelter? I called and they said if it is unrecoverable it will cost 25 to put it to sleep. Of course I dont have the medicine for it and the shelter might, but they also may just put it to sleep.

Sounds like that it needs a vet desperately. Don't take it to a kill shelter if you are going to take it to one.

I don't know too much about kitty stuff since mine has never been sick, but this says that upper respiratory infections are pretty common:

I would take it to a vet asap. It probably has a number of things wrong with him...but I would not take it to a shelter. If you are short on cash you can find some vets who are for low income people...just do a search on google. It was very nice of you to take the cat in...good luck op hope everything goes well.

unrecoverable? that is not true! what the cat has is a very common cat ailment, called an upper respiratory infection. A simple round of antibiotics takes care of that. Call a different vet.

If you care about the cat, which it sounds like you do, then don't take it to a shelter. Take it to a good vet. the antibiotics aren't that expensive either.

If i had the money i would take it to a vet. the place i called is more of an adoption place, but i dont know if they would try to fix the cat for adoption or just kill it.

Hey OP - show some compassion and provide for the cat's needs as best you can. It'll surely return the love and you'll be the better for it. You know, G_d smiles on such things when you have to give an undisguised account of your time on earth at the pearly gates.

Why the " lol " in your subject line?

Is this funny?

Sounds distressing. The cat may die if it doesn't get anti-biotics. Cough up a few bucks and take the cat to a vet.
If you won't do it then find a kind person who loves animals and ask them.

The animal came to you.
This is an opportunity to do a kindness.

Do it.

At the very least the cat needs food, water and a quiet place to regain his health. If he survives his illness perhaps then he would have a better chance of being adopted at a shelter. Let us know what happens with the cat. Have you given him a name yet?

Poor kitty just needs some antibiotics. The fact that the kitty is eating is a good sign. Usually when there is no hope a cat will go off to ... you know ... in peace.

The cat knows what it needs and it chose to enter into a humans home. He/she needs shelter, food, sleep and meds.

If the stray allows you to pet it its not feral. Could be a good companion for you!

Keep it. Your instincts are correct. If you can possibly afford a visit to the vet that would be ideal. Otherwise, continue to feed the poor thing and keep it warm. That just might do the trick.

Bless you.

Try calling a few shelters or the animal warden and see if they can recommend a vet that will treat it pro bono or at a reduced rate.

Even try calling some vets and ask directly. Maybe offer to pay for the medicine and have them not charge for the visit.

If you have to send it to a shelter - find a no kill one.
(but I'm with the camp that says it found you for a reason. If you can keep it, keep it and you'll be well rewarded)

This is good advice. You can buy inexpensive antibiotics and put them in the cat's food. The cat sounds like an abandoned house pet, for who knows what reason.

It is a respiratory infection DO NOT TAKE TO A SHELTER THEY WILL PUT THE POOR LITTLE ANGEL TO SLEEP ASAP WITH OUT CARING FOR IT!!!... the sweet little baby needs 10-14 days of clavamox.... take to the vet and care for the sweet baby your self at home.... the little baby picked your place to come to for a reason.... so doctor it up.... love it and give it a loving home.... I say this as i sit here and look down at one that was in the same shape with the same thing.... cost me $90 to get him the mandatory shots when taking to a vet and the medicine.... those $90 dollars was tough to let go.... but not so tough when i think of those wet little kisses on the cheek every morning when he thinks it is time for mommy to get out of bed and get him some chow... lol @ 4:30 a.m..... the love he gives back is worth more than the $90 .... so please don't give up on the sweet baby.

this does sound like an upper respiratory infection very common and a lot of times fatal in feral cats.if you can't afford a vet, keep feeding it and see if he gets a bit healthier.he was lucky,he found a warm place to stay and a warm heart to care for him, sometimes you have to accept the responsibility that is put to you out of the blue.cats are smart and are very loving pets.

Go to a petco or a petsmart ... open the doors and drop him off ... wear a hood :-)
They won't euthanize him.. they will give him med tx and have him adopted .. or google travel vet cat mobile .. we have one in ct .. super cheap

If the cat will let you approach and or touch him or her, it may not be feral and thus may be somebodies lost pet. It may even be chipped with the owners info. A vet could determine. Also, check the classifieds for lost cats. If no owner can be be found then you have a new low maintenance moth eating spider squashing mouse trap. Don't forget the catnip.

Wear a thin glove or sock over your hand.

Pet it several times a day while talking to it, making it to purr.

The purring means it is content and the sound will help it to heal itself.

Feed it and show it love.

This cat will turn out to be the best cat you've ever had.

The feline probably just has a cold and it will take a bit to get over it.

I almost guarantee it will be just fine.

I did this once to a poor little half dead kitty and he grew to be a big fatty that was happy.

He knew I saved him and is very faithful.
