I have given away at least 25 copies over the years. It is a wonderful book, a perfect one to begin a spiritual journey.

My favourite book!

My friend gaveme a copy years ago. Definitely a book to be shared, wonder how many people received it as a gift rather than bought it.

I loved this book! Changed how I looked at things too. I was telling a friend about this two weeks ago and found the book online to read!

Since it is still in print and only costs about $8 dollars U.S., I buy several and give it to young people that have never heard of Bach. I can't believe that this knowledge has been with us for about 35 years.

I would honestly tell people that the ideas he talks about in this silly little book are completely true and are not fantasy!!!!

Are you talking about the book of Romanian writer, Adrian Nuta? Yeah...that's as great as the one of Richard Bach's as well. And there was one more: "Between Nowhere and Anywhere Else" :D.

Some people have problem with the word "messiah" in the book. I understand the word messiah to mean "Wise One". In my view Jesus, Buddha, Krishna and many, many others were Wise Ones. There are some walking the Earth today, but we just don't know them as such.

Yes. I try to take knowledge from anywhere I can find it. I then sit down alone, think about what I have been told and then let my heart tell me what is true. I keep what feels right and discard the rest. That is the only way to find truth. I don't think that there is anything that you can read that can harm you if you listen to your heart.

But, this discussion is about THIS book. Not the bible. If you haven't read it, then why the anger?

Re: If you want to read real truth about our existence, this silly little paperback from the 1970s can show you the way! Honest! *Smile*-
excellent book.

the story is understood when considered with the principle of 'trying'.

we try and try to live, survive, gain, prevent loss, protect, save, attack, create, destroy, know, forget,find entertainment, be stimulated, be happy, ...

we want love, fame, fortune, praise, challenge, competetion, debate, mystery, intrigue, entertainment, stimulation, attachment, children, parents, relationships...

all of the above is why we are still here..clinging.

to let go of these things is terrifying...

to let go of these things is the next stage of evolution

the result of letting go is nirvana...it is 'to be'. and nothing else...it is bliss and happiness beyond anything else ever experienced. It is better than the best sex, it is better than the best acheivement...and it is CONTINUAL...NOT MOMENTARY LIKE THE FEELINGS GRANTED IN THE EXPERIENCES ABOVE.

and miracles follow anyone that lets go. .....

but who shall let go of their precious.... their precious ego...

That was very good OP and right (write) up my alley. I love written works that have a parallel spiritual message.

I found an old book at the used book store, it was published in 1923 and it is 95 pages with some of the pages showing the authors artwork...it is called "The Prophet" you may have heard about it. Here is my favorite piece in it...although the whole short book speaks to the soul!

When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams
as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
He threshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneads you until you are pliant;
And then he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.

All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.

But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.
Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.

When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart," but rather, "I am in the heart of God."
And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

It's me again...here is another of my favorites!

“I was suddenly made aware of another world of beauty and mystery such as I had never imagined to exist, except in poetry. It was as though I had begun to see and smell and hear for the first time. The world appeared to me as Wordsworth describes with “the glory and freshness of a dream.” The sight of a wild rose growing on a hedge, the scent of lime-tree blossoms caught suddenly as I rode down a hill on a bicycle, came to me like visitations from another world. But it was not only my senses that were awakened. I experienced an overwhelming emotion in the presence of nature, especially at evening. It began to have a kind of sacramental character for me. I approached it with a sense of almost religious awe and , in a hush that comes before sunset, I felt again the presence of an almost unfathomable mystery. The song of the birds, the shape of the trees, the colors of the sunset, were so many signs of the presence, which seemed to be drawing me to itself.”

I have over 300 books (physical books) in my metaphysical library. Illusions is still my favorite. I love it where Don explains life to Richard by taking him into the movie, "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid". After explaining why life is like a motion picture he explains, "We are suppose to be fun loving creatures. The otters of the Universe."
