Warning! Be Careful Out there! Drano Bombs In Your Mailbox, Yard, Etc.
A warning we have been made aware of states that kids are putting Drano, tin foil, and water into plastic drink bottles, capping it up and leaving it on lawns, gardens, driveways, in mail boxes just waiting for you to pick it up with the intention of putting it into the rubbish bags.

Know that you may never make it!

If the bottle is picked up, shaken, even just a little, in about thirty seconds or less, it can build up sufficient gas to explode with enough force to remove some of your extremities or blind you!

Pay attention to this! Be extremely careful when you pick up any plastic bottles that may be in your yards, on highway cleanup etc.

How do they get all the ingredients to stay separate in the bottle?

This sounds like a hoax. Does not make sense. No way to time the mixing of ingredients.

Prince William fire officials are warning Prince William residents to steer clear of what they call a dangerous homemade explosive.

Authorities are seeing an uptick in reports of chemical bottle bombs in the county – most recently noted in the Westridge area this month, according to Prince William fire and rescue spokeswoman Kim Hylander.

Detailed Analysis
According to this warning message, which has been circulating in various incarnations since around May 2010, kids are using drain cleaning chemical, Drano, along with tin foil and water to construct bottle bombs. The message claims that the bottle bombs are being left in mailboxes, lawns, driveways and other conspicuous places where they may injure unsuspecting people who pick them up. The message warns that if the primed bottle bombs are picked up and shaken even a little, they may explode and potentially cause serious injury to people holding them.

The potential threat described in the warning is real. Bottle bombs can be constructed from easily procured everyday items and chemicals, including Drano, aluminium foil and plastic drink bottles. Moreover, teenage pranksters in many parts of the world have been making and detonating such devices for decades. The devices are also known as MacGyver bombs, acid bombs, works bombs and soda bombs.

When the foil and drain cleaning chemical combine, a powerful chemical reaction occurs. This chemical reaction releases a gas which can build up pressure in the plastic bottle until it explodes, spewing out an extremely hot and caustic liquid. The devices have caused a number of injuries, including series chemical burns, eye irritation or blindness, limb and facial injuries and hearing damage.

How are all the ingredients kept separate in the bottle so it does not go off right away?

Re: Warning! Be Careful Out there! Drano Bombs In Your Mailbox, Yard, Etc.
I think I was about 12 when I was shooting a bb-gun on my uncles property next to the St Johns River in Jacksonville Fl. I had brought some cans out to shoot and after a while I noticed a 2 liter leaning up next to a very small tree. I shot it from about 20 yards away and it blew up in a pretty large explosion, all the surrounding neighbors came running out of their homes not knowing what had happened. My dad came out and after looking at the remnants told me I had shot a "drain-o" bomb. Thought it was pretty awesome but never tried to make one myself.

This reaction is used in drain cleaners. They are mostly made out of strong alkalis, to which alumunim or zinc has been added. The alkalis break down organic residues chemically. In addition, the formation of hydrogen leads to a bubbling effect which adds an additional mechanical cleaning mechanism.
