the plot of a book i read recently, Manslayer, in the Warhammer Black Library range of books, aludes to this.

a cult, under the influence of the demonic forces of chaos, corrupt a bunch of a cannons on their way to defend a key fortress. the idea is that the cannons will come alive using magic and turn on the defenders when they are put in place on the walls.

i think you are onto something here.
