I was working on staff at the (meditation cult) "Maharishi International University" in Fairfield Iowa around 1980. It was Sunday and I was getting ready to do my laundry, but the 15 of us living in the building shared one machine so I was waiting my turn.

This older guy with real shiny eyes pulls up outside in a new red Corvette. He says his name is "Do" or Applewhite or something like that.

He asked where he could do his laundry, and I told him that the laundromat in town would be the fastest and easiest. He offers to take me there in his car to do my laundry too, and I accept and get into the car with him.

He then tells me his story of how he was a successful contractor and went through a total nervous breakdown and spiritual awakening. And of some female soul-mate with a similar sounding name.

I looked up at the visor in his corvette and there was a big note and the keys of the car attached saying something to the effect of, "God gave me this car. If God tells you it is yours, here are the keys and registration for the taking.", something like that.

Anyhow he told me most of his story, it seemed he was really not forming a group yet but was totally absorbed in some path.

While in town I had some things to do and he offered to do my laundry for me. When I got back he was folding all my clothes ever so perfectly, even my underwear.

He drove me home and that was the last I heard or thought of him, until about a decade later when this guy and his Heaven's Gate cult was all over MSM news for committing suicide in order they believed to rendezvous with comet Hale-Bop.

I also knew Charles Manson for 3 months in the 2004 (don't ever call Charles Manson "Dude", or that will get him real worked up) ... but that is another story... ;)

You too huh? I've told this story here a couple times. Here is my experience.

Dec 23rd 77, I was walking home from a friend's house and a baby blue VW bug passed me. i took a right down another road and about 5 minutes later it went by the opposite direction on the road i was just on. it caught my attention when i heard it coming back but it didn't turn so i kept walking. After another mile or so down the road I heard it coming up behind me and he stopped and asked if i wanted a ride. Knowing better but being young and naive, I didn't want to walk the rest of the way so got in. I was a little creeped out because it seemed like he was pacing me. He was polite and I settled down until I saw the fish fillet knife between the seats. I then tensed up and grabbed the door handle and he did his best to get me to relax as he could see i was thinking of jumping out. There was only a couple miles left so i stuck it out - nervous as hell though. When he got to the crossroads near my neighborhood i told him i was close enough and he stopped to let me out. Here's the freaky part - as I was walking away, he asked me something and I didn't hear him so I walked closer and he said "Do you want some head?" Only being 13, I hadn't heard that term before so said, what and he then asked if I wanted a blowjob. I knew that term and when I realized what he asked; I took off through the woods to our neighborhood on the other side and didn't stop till I got inside the house, looking over my shoulder as I ran home. A few days later I told my friends but they didn't believe me till he got caught and showed him on TV. Only then did I realize who he was and how close i came to a serial killer.
