It seems you live in a conveniently black and white universe. There is a world of possibilities between where we are now and 'end of the world' as you put it. Having some of your assets as stores is probably better than money in the bank - given the way prices are rising.
It could also see you through some short term upheaval till things are calmer.
Or in the worst case scenario, it could buy valuable time while society rebuilds itself.
Of course there remains the possibility that we will all get swamped by a b* big wave. Or you may fall under a bus tomorrow. Or have a heart attack and die. So many possibilities...
But that doesn't stop most of us having home insurance etc. I don't see much difference.
