if people all over the world are actually looting each other's homes to survive...and killing each other... and even eating each other...i'd put my bets on the person who can hide in the wilderness the longest without seeing another human being. and then when he finally emerges, he better be a bad ass.

The first portion is that society merges into "gangs" - you are either part of one, or you risk your life. To survive one would have to stay mobile in seclusion. Once emerging after a set amount of time, you more than likely will find organized gangs, of which you are not a part of. Hmmmm, catch 22...
