The more immediate cause for the war was tensions over territory in the Balkans. Austria-Hungary competed with Serbia and Russia for territory and influence in the region and they pulled the rest of the Great Powers into the conflict through their various alliances and treaties. [link to www.hurriyetdailynews.com] Azeri-Armenian clashes 'may escalate' - Hillary Clinton US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has voiced concern over border clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan - hours after three Armenian soldiers died in the latest skirmishes. Speaking in Armenia, she warned that the clashes "could escalate into a much broader conflict" in the Caucasus. The two former Soviet republics fought a bloody war over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh in the 1990s. [link to www.bbc.co.uk] I've said before in several threads that these two going to war is the highest chance of WW3 that there is. Turkey and Azerbaijan have a military pact to go to war if either are attacked. Russia and Armenia have the same pact with each other. NOT GOOD. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 17408221 United States 06/05/2012 05:45 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | YA THINK??? Russia has military bases in Armenia. Turkey wants to kick some Armenians asses. Azerbaijan wants to kick some Armenians asses. NATO is backing one side, Russia and China is backing the other. All of this on Iran's border... where war could start at any moment, possibly even Israeli troops in Azerbaijan right now... Georgia/Russia hating each other... (not to mention Russian planes will have to go through Georgian airspace to reach Armenia in case of war) All of the countries involved if war breaks out : Turkey Russia Armenia Azerbaijan Georgia That is bare minimum.... then you add... Iran Israel NATO China Lebanon Syria This whole thing could start WW3 for real.... |

While this is happening, Russia secures its southern border by preemptively deploying in Iran to prevent an Israeli attack (and a Middle East conflagration). God knows what would happen from there. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 16652833 Slovenia 06/05/2012 05:59 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Russia vs NATO Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1238775 because of Azerbaijan and Armenia border clashes? yeah, right. Not over a clash, but if the two went to war both Turkey and Russia have a military presence in those countries which would be immediately involved in open warfare. Turkey = NATO/U.S, Britain, France, Germany, Poland, etc. Russia = Russia/Ukraine/Armenia/CIS/Baltic states So by extension you could quite easily say that it could definitely be WW3 if both Armenia and Azerbaijan went to war. As an Austrian you should know all too well how alliance systems in volatile regions can result in world war. |
